Russia Offers Su-30MKI Technology Transfer Under ‘Make-in-India’

Russia has expressed willingness to transfer technology of 332 components of the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft under the ‘Make-in-India’ program.

These components, also called line replacement units (LRUs) refer to both critical and non-critical components and fall into four major heads such as Radio and Radar; Electrical & Electronics System; Mechanical System and Instrument System.

India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) which manufactures the aircraft under licence from its Russian arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, has opened talks with the latter and the Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer, Irkut Corp., to enable Indian industries to manufacture the LRUs through transfer of technology (TOT) from the relevant Russian manufacturers of the components, the Times of India reported on Friday.

Russia and India have commenced discussion since last August on further TOT for the Sukhoi Su-30MKI under the ‘Make-in-India’ program to enable greater participation from the Indian private industry in defence manufacture, the report added. India will receive the full complement of 272 Su-30MKI aircraft by the end of next month. While the number of aircraft with the Indian air force increases, so also does the need for maintenance, repair and overhaul. With a planned service life of 30 years, the requirement for LRUs will only increase.

Vitaly Borodich, senior vice-president (military aviation), IRKUT Corp had told defenseworld.net during an interview earlier this year, “Of the 272 aircraft contracted by India, 222 aircraft will have been co-produced in India with HAL as our main partner.”

Borodich had said that India (HAL) has mastered licence production to the extent that certain critical raw material is sourced locally.

seems like a good deal

but only if this would of happened 5 to 8 years ago.

is Russia going to do the same for Pak-FA/FGFA? a plane that is the future of the Indian Airforce

How would it have helped if this had happened 5 to 8 years ago. ?

PAK-FA was supposed to have be Made in India as per the MoU.

because of MRCA. you had no leverage over France. you could of simply built more Su-30MKI while reducing the cost of importing expensive parts.

now look 8 years later only 36 Rafale and no Make In India.

LOL whatever do you mean ?

Su-30MKI is still being made in HAL under FULL ToT

This agreement is to allow OTHERS to make the LRU's as well, sharing of License OTHER THAN HAL.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Rafale.

This is to DIVERSIFY Suppliers and introduce COMPETITION to HAL. No something HAL will be happy about.

8 years in future changes a lot- specially in case of India- you can expect a Private firm making Rafale-M for Navy carriers here in India-

and have another 5-8 years of negotiations for Rafale-M

India best bet is the Mig-29K for it's carriers

in hindsight India would of just made more Su-30MKI instead of wasting time on Rafale

hell if India has chose the F-18 E/F would have had 100 aircraft by now for both the airforce and naval carriers all Made in India that's how desperate Boeing was or would of been.

This ToT helps in maintenance and manufacturing of spare parts.

This offer is way to late now when india already has 272 aircrafts n order

Negotiations are already taking place- we'll know the result soon-

Mig-29K is very good plane for Carriers- But engine fatigue is a issue there- IN will certainly have either Rafale or SH for Its carriers- and It will be made here-

Su-30MKI has Its own issues and It is not feasible to maintain a Huge MKI fleet- infact MKI was more of a political purchase than military-

Su 30MKI has a different role than Rafale. Rafale was required for Ground support as a bomb truck.

As a replacement for Jaguar and Mig 27 and Mig 23.

Only Rafale is OmniRole and that makes it convenient of A2A superiority as well.

However the primary requirement is still the same. LCA is to replace mig 21.

US is an unreliable "partner" so its foolish to buy strategic weapons from them. Both IAF and IN will never opt for US goodies when there is an alternative available.

US has a good space only in tactical requirements like C130 or Apache. P-8I because of lack of alternatives and C17 as a payback for Nuclear deal and because we have 120 AN 32 as a back up along with IL 78.

don't India has TOT already ? :S I thought India already has full TOT of MKI...

Article already mentions LRU's.

They are replacement units to be supplied to Base Maintenance depots. HAL has a poor reputation for providing LRU's on time resulting in lower Su 30MKI serviceability rates.

Some components are made by Russian suppliers exclusively-

Nope. Only Metals like Titanium and Nickel super alloys is imported. All electronic goodies and engine is made in India.
