Russia lost South Sakhalin to Japan in 1905. It wasn't until 1945 Russia took that back from Japan.

Russia not only took back South Sakhalin which was lost to Japan in 1905 but also took Kuril islands from Japan. So they did revenge. Hong Kong was not under lease. Hong Kong was British territory with a British territory flag. It was British from 1841 until 1997. As Sun Tzu once said. A war without bloodshed is the best outcome. Britain figured they can't beat China to keep Hong Kong so they gave it back without a fight.
