I don't think those small countries feared Russia for its nuclear arsenal. They feared Russia for its conventional war machine, which it has successfully used quite a few times on its neighbors, until now.

For a nation that burnt its capital Moscow to defeat Napoleon and used human wave tactics to defeat Nazi, I can not say the threshold of using nuke for Russia will be too high

If joining Nato means that Russian conventional forces are hand tied then so be it. But creating bad relations with your neighbours leaves endless low intensity conflicts and tensions, case in point Palestine and Kashmir. This drains resource, development and money. If Finland is willing to become a front line state and endure this it's their choice.

Unless China joins the war I see no success in Russia blitzkrieg against Finland.

Wing Loong 2 has SATCOM enabling extended range recon and strike. Currently, Russian drones don't have SATCOM.

Would Finland even need help against a Russia whose airforce is garbage?

They have 55 F/A-18 18s and almost 1000 AMRAAMs. More than enough to take out hundreds of Russian planes


Size of Finnish Army is 20,000 and they can within days increase this to 40,000 if they call up reservists.
With full mobilisation the Finns could get to nearly 300,000 men within 1-2 months.

Finnish army has 200 Leopard tanks that are a lot better than any tank that Russia currently field. In total around 250 tanks better than anything Russia has.

Russia would face the same humiliation that happened to Stalin when he attacked Finland in 1939.

The Fins are tough fighters. They would have ample forest cover and would fight using insurgent tactics.

If I was Putin I would try to off ramp Ukraine with whatever best case realistic scenario he can manage.

Regroup and learn from mistakes.

And plan with China for the emerging world order. (Looking at the map, they can make things very interesting for the Western Pacific if they plan properly)

Whatever he does, he should make sure Russia doesn't get dragged into a long campaign of attrition in Ukraine.

Which is exactly what the West wants to happen it's looking like.

The US is playing a very high stake game here.
But its probably been calculated. The prize could be another century of US global preminence.

Basically tie down Russia and its resources in eastern europe, Russian western flank, with minimal use of US military resources.
Then Proceed to take on China in East Asia. US is now free to fully concentrate on China.

Its a win win strategy for US and partly also UK. Kill two birds with one stone. Both continental Europe and Russia is bogged down. Europe could be forced to cut off Russian oil and gas, and import more from USA and its allies.

China now facing might of US Navy cannot hope for the same support from a Russia that is busy in European theathre.

The reason this grand US strategy, which is something i contemplated in my own mind, is risky, is because Europe may decide to sign a peace agreement with Russia akin to Molotov-Ribbentropp. Which in turn could make the whole Eurasian landmass more united and potentially make US victory in East Asia less likely to happen.

Agree that China is no easy task for America.
But history shows that no nation is invincible. That applies both to USA and China
