Russia says one of its warships fired warning shots at a Turkish fishing vessel in the Aegean Sea to avoid a collision.

A Russian defence ministry statement said the Turkish vessel approached to 600m (1,800ft) before turning away in response to Russian small arms fire.

The Turkish military attache in Moscow has been summoned to the foreign ministry over the incident.

Relations remain tense over Turkey's shooting down of a Russian bomber.

The warplane crashed in Syria in last month's clash, with Turkey maintaining it crossed into its airspace. Russia disputes this.

In the latest incident, Russia's defence ministry said its frigate Smetlivy spotted the fishing boat when it was 1,000m (3,000ft) away heading towards the Russian vessel's starboard side.

"Despite numerous attempts by the crew of the Smetlivy, the crew of the Turkish fishing boat did not make radio contact and did not respond to visual signals by semaphore or warning flares," the ministry said in a statement.

To prevent a collision, "small arms were fired in the direction of the Turkish vessel from a range that is not lethal."

Russian military vessels are involved in Russia's intervention against rebels in Syria.

Russia need psychological support.

. . .
its a warning shot. every navy in the world would have done that. its their protocol to follow

. .
Only cowards would fire at a fishing vessel... No guts to shot at an actual military ship.

You must be a moron. The Russian naval ship radioed the Turkish ship and it did not respond, the Turkish ship kept coming closer, while the Russian ship was anchored thus the Turkish ship had to give way by maritime rules.

Russia did everything accordingly. Everyone remembers what happened to the USS Cole--it was attacked by a small boat, 17 sailors were killed. In that part of the world the threats from such attacks are high.

I am a moron? Well you Russians consider all Slavs morons you anti-slav SOBs.

Since when Turks know Russian and since when Russian knows Turkish? Its pointless.

USS Cole? Wasn't that in west Africa?

Only a coward fighter will fire a non warning missile against defenseless attacker aircraft.

And the cowards loitered for over an hour at low altitude to avoid radar, even at the expense of burning through fuel at a very high rate while being far from base. After the coward(s) fired their missile(s) the cowards bolted north. Very reckless and cowardly, many people including western experts believe that the F-16s ambushed the SU-24 due to the fact that they were loitering at an unusually low altitude and their "radio warnings" were broadcast on a civil radio frequency. They pretty much did this so they could make the excuse that they "warned" the SU-24 knowing full well that the SU-24 probably never received any warning.

Military vessels fire warning shots more often then people think. Considering the Turkish ship ignored radio warning and kept approaching i would say it got lucky. A number of military ships have been attacked by small boats/ships.

Keep supporting Russia as you violate other territories too like Vietnam.

Go blame Turkey for your faulty equipment...

Hilarious how a Russian has face to accuse us for not warning them when in fact they were warned over months to not to violate the airspace apart from the 10 warnings they recieved while violating the airspace for multiple times that day.

Meanwhile...

Russians not responding, UK says.

Yes you are a moron. Firstly you called the Russian ship "cowards" for following maritime rules and procedures. Secondly you are a mega moron for your "anti-slav" comment.

Russians generally communicate in English with foreign vessels.

Why does it matter where the USS Cole was bombed? The world trade center was bombed in New York, the Paris attacks were in Paris, ect. The Russian ship was in a dangerous part of the world, it would not be difficult for ISIS to attack a ship in that part of the world if it really wanted to.

Most likely it is one of those pathetic Russian provocations to remind us that they are 'onto us'. But as the Turkish foreign minister said, Russia is making a mistake by assuming Turkey's patience is unlimited.

However if it indeed happened as in Russian claims, meaning that a Turkish fishing boat charging towards a fvcking destroyer while ignoring all the verbal and visiual warnings, then I'd say using warning shots is fair and reasonable. But then again, why would they do that? I'm pretty sure nobody would do something as retarded as that except the Russian pilots...
