Russia, China discussing joint tapping of coal deposits — Deputy PM
17 Nov, 17:24

In particular, the sides disussed the development of Zashulanskoe coal deposit in the Trans-Baikal Region

MOSCOW, November 17. /TASS/. Russia targets further increase of coal supplies to China and the parties are also considering an opportunity of joint development of coal reserves in Russia, including the Zashulanskoe coal deposit in the Trans-Baikal Region, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said after the meeting of the Russia-China intergovernmental commission for energy cooperation.
"We support further increase of coal supplies and new long-term contracts will be considered in this regard, along with joint development of coal deposits in Russia, the Zashulanskoe coal deposit in the Trans-Baikal Region in particular," Novak said.
The deputy prime minister also noted prospects of cooperation in the gas sphere. The parties highlighted that 12 bln cubic meters of natural gas were transported over the eastern route as of the end of October 2021.

I rather China start phasing out coal as an energy source as soon as possible.

Yes we do, China has rock solid plans in action to achieve net zero in 2060. Last year coal electricity further dropped to 56.8% of energy mix. Renewable techs are indeed fast expanding, but obviously gonna take time to build, so for the mean time coal techs are still important (CTX, ultra-supercritical plants, CCS, etc) and we have the world best.

Say Advanced ultra-supercritical plants use additional technology innovations to bring temperatures to more than 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit and pressure levels to more than 5,000 pounds per square inch, thus further improving efficiency.

China has begun various CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) solutions, and has built the world's first near-zero emissions coal-fueled power plant - the Huaneng Tianjin IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) Plant - since 2009 (operational since 2011).

The Tianjin IGCC plant is just the starter for nation-wide INDC (Intended Nationally Determined Contribution) program to use modern high efficiency low emission (HELE) coal-fired power generation and develop carbon capture and storage (CCS). The five-year plan is seeking to reduce all emissions from coal-fired power and other industrial uses, not just CO2 emissions but also SOx, NOx and other particulate matter. Steps are taken to close down smaller inefficient power stations and is building large HELE coal-fired power plants to meet electricity demand.
