The Pesh Imam of a mosque was gunned down in New Karachi on Wednesday triggering violence and a protest in the area. One of the men arrested for attacking the Pesh Imam has disclosed that he was an activist of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and paid Rs15,000 a month for murders.
New Karachi Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chaudhry Mohammad Akhtar told The News that 40-year-old Maulana Hasaan Rasheed, the Pesh Imam at Jamia Masjid Islamia located in Sector 5E of New Karachi, was teaching the Holy Quran to children in the afternoon at the seminary inside the mosque.
Three men on a motorcycle pulled over outside the mosques main gate and went inside. After locating the Pesh Imam, they opened fire on him.
Rasheed was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he breathed his last. The police officer said the Pesh Imam had suffered three bullet wounds, two to the head and one in the chest. The assailants had used 9mm pistols, he added.
The seminarys students chased the fleeing assailants and apprehended one of them. The two others managed to escape.
The police officer said an angry mob thrashed the assailant with fists and kicks. The mob was trying to kill him with iron rods when police reached there and took him into custody, he added. The attacker was shifted to the investigation unit.
Protest
Violence broke out in the area following the Pesh Imams murder as some enraged men fired gunshots in the air and forcibly shut down shops.
Angry protesters gathered in front of the Bilal Colony police station demanding that the arrested attacker should be handed over to them.
When the police refused, they burnt tyres on various roads causing massive traffic gridlocks in New Karachi.
Rs15,000 per month
West Range DIG Jawed Alam Odho told The News that the arrested assailant had been identified as Kashif, an activist of the TTP Maulana Fazalullah group of Swat and a resident of Quaidabad. Kashif was trained in Waziristan and paid Rs15,000 every month for murders, he added.
The assailant has also disclosed that the Pesh Imam was targeted on the suspicion that he was working for the law enforcement agencies and tipping them off about the Talibans activities.
The DIG said the arrested man was being further interrogated and his associates would be nabbed soon.
ISO activist killed
An Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) activist was shot dead outside a car showroom near Noorani Kabab House on Shahrah-e-Quaideen in the morning.
Jamshed SP Asad Raza told The News that 35-year-old Tanveer Bangash, a resident of the Bangash Para area of Lines Area, was present at Times Motors, the showroom where he worked as an accountant, when three men on two motorcycles pulled over outside its premises. When Bangash grew suspicious and approached the men, they shot him. They also took away his licensed pistol and cell phone.
Bangash was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he expired. The SP said the victim had suffered four bullet wounds to his upper torso. The police found 30-bore pistol bullet shells at the crime scene.
The police official said in the year 2005, Bangash was heading towards Soldier Bazaar to deliver cash when some men had tried to rob him. He had opened fire, killing one of the robbers while another was arrested. A case was lodged at the Soldier Bazaar police station.
Similarly in 2007, Bangash had killed a robber in the remit of the Ferozabad police station.
Bangashs funeral prayer was offered in Guru Mandir and he was later buried at the Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard.
Two cops attacked
Two policemen were shot and injured near Asghar Ali Shah Stadium in North Nazimabad at night. SP Khurram Waris said constables Jawed Siddiqi and Jameel Siddiqi were heading home on a motorcycle, when two men, also on a motorcycle, opened fire on them.
The injured policemen were moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
The SP said Jawed had suffered a bullet wound to his neck, while Jameel was shot in the leg.
He added Jawed was posted at the Peerabad police station and Jameel was serving at the Rizvia police station. Some militant group might be responsible for the attack, the police official suspected.
