Romania is to shelter 2,362 extra community immigrants, according to the scheme submitted by the European Commission within the European Agenda on Migration outlining the immediate measures that will be taken in order to respond to the crisis situation in the Mediterranean as well as the steps to be taken in the coming years to better manage migration in all its aspects.
Thus, the Commission made a Recommendation proposing an EU-wide resettlement scheme in order to help Italy and Greece to cope with the migrants flows. The EU budget will provide dedicated funding of an extra EUR 50 million in 2015/2016 to support this scheme.
The scheme is to apply on the refugees from Syria and Eritrea arrived in Italy and Greece after April 15 this year or after the mechanism comes into force.
A total of 40,000 refugees are to be divided from Italy and Greece among other EU member states, with these countries getting EUR 6,000 for each immigrant.
According with the scheme, Romania is to receive 1,023 immigrants from Italy, covering a 4.26 pc share out of the total of 24,000 persons. Germany has the biggest share, 21.91 pc- 5,258 immigrants. France ranks second- 4,051 refugees and Spain third- 2,573 persons.
From Greece, 682 immigrants are expected to come to Romania (4.26 pc share), the rest of them are to be allotted to other 22 countries.
Besides, EC proposes that other 20,000 refugees should be accepted over the next two years, within a mechanism of international protection recommended by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The countries to take part in this scheme will receive a total of EUR 50 million during 2015-2016.
Within this mechanism, Romania will have a 3.29 pc share, meaning 657 immigrants.
