Rolls-Royce to offer Eurojet EJ200 engine to power India’s AMCA

Why we dint go for 3D vector like Su35/mig 35 ? May be Americans yet to receive maturity on 3D vector. They use 2D for raptor also .

Anyways going for F 414-GE with tweaking will be good for us . More economical and more reliable and more importantly will have less money spent on infrastructure for all the three engine variants .

What happened to our indigenous jet engine programme ? did they completely terminate it or still working on it in some scale?
Terminated !!! But not completely . Kaveri engine will be used to power UCAV , Marine applications and many other variants to power smaller aircraft like trainer , commercial jets etc ...

I'm glad India is not trying to build one from scratch. It had learned the lesson after Kaveri.

Only GTX-35VS programme is closed. GTRE is now running two separate successor engine programmes, the K9+ programme and the K10 programme.

We have spoken to suppliers about this, to Rolls-Royce. So if a customer decides we can do it, we can integrate a new engine. It will take a bit of time, but it can be done."

This is believed to be a reference to an EJ200-powered JF-17 targeted at Saudi Arabia, which in early 2014 discussed possible co-production and financing.

I find that highely unlikely. How can the EJ-200 fit into an aircraft built for the R-93? The aircraft would have to be extensively modified, which doesn't make economic sense for a low cost aircraft like JF-17.

That was also the reason GE-414 won the competition to power Tejas Mk2, because it can fit in place of the GE-404 without any modification to the airframe. (Other than enlarging air intake.) The EJ-200 was a more powerful and newer engine.

Apparently Eurojet engine can be installed with some work in JF-17. JFT wasn't built around RD-93 only. It can receive WS-13 as well. Given that Tejas and JF-17 belong to same class, probably they can use same engine.

With work, it probably can. But the question is whether the money, time and effort required would justify the benefits. The program cost would soar, and therefore the aquisition cost would too. Fot a 100 million dollar aircraft, it may be worth it to add another 10 million for re-engining. But to add that amount to a 25 million dollar plane?

The main attraction of JF-17 is the low cost, for a 4th gen fighter. That would go for a toss, if such costs have to be made. Besides, it will also tie up scientists and engineers who could use that time for more productive purposes.

The link you provided, in addition to being dubious and vague at best, talks about Eurojet engine being offered to Saudi Arabia if they desire to integrate it with a platform of their choice, not the standard JF17.

And redesigning an aircraft around a new engine is very expensive and time consuming, as HAL found out with Tejas.

Hence the talk of designing AMCA around a proven engine.

As the article noted, it is for the export customer who wants a western engine. For example Saudi Arabia would want a western engine as Russian engine is a death sentence for them. Saudi Arabia may not want it for themselves. They might fund it for lets say Lebanon, Egypt or Yemen. Pakistan will probably continue to use RD-93 till WS-13 becomes viable.

For an export customer, new airframes will be built and if EJ200 is their requirement then they will be built around this engine. Costs will be borne by customer and I don't think it will be phenomenally high. Pakistan never wanted reliance on major western component in aircraft. EJ200 wasn't on their wish list.

Yes, the same part. I am not sure what the cost will be but I am assuming it will be manageable otherwise this PAF official would not mention it as an option. If his words are to be believed then it is an option available. I am not surprised because Tejas and JF-17 are in same class and this is very much plausible.

According to you Pakistan didn't want want any Western influence on this aircraft...... so is that the reason why France was approached to provide the avionics suite as well as weapons for JF-17..???
Thales was contacted for their RC-400 Fire Control Radar and MBDA for the MICA A2A missiles.....,.
but the deal fell through...!!

Coming to the engine part....
The EJ200 has a diameter which 25% smaller than the RD-93..
whereas in case of Tejas the F-404 and F-414 have identical dimensions simply because F-414 was developed from the F-404 itself.....that is why re-engining the Tejas MK-II was a lot simpler and cost effective however I don't see the same feasibility in terms of cost when you are talking about re-engining the JF-17 with an EJ200 because it's 25% smaller in diameter compared to a RD-93......a lot of structural modifications will be needed and it would raise costs way too much and cost of the plane will increase.......
Will the JF-17 be then attractive to customers because it's main Forte is it's cheap and 4th Gen.!!
