Richard Holbrooke knew Pakistan Generals are lying him on India: Book

WASHINGTON: Late Richard Holbrooke, the first US special Afghan-Pak envoy, was fully aware that the Pakistani generals were lying to him on their support to the extremist groups against India, but he was against cutting off military aid to Islamabad,:sick:a new book has said.

In his latest book "Beyond War: Reimagining American Influence in a New Middle East", the two-time Pulitzer winner David Rhode said Holbrooke wanted massive aid for Pakistan and launch some signature big projects there, in the absence of which he increasingly became frustrated with the USAID.

"While publicly praising the Pakistanis, he was tough- minded in Pakistan. Holbrooke was fully aware that the Pakistani military was still supporting the Afghan Taliban as proxies against India and that some Pakistani generals were lying to his face," Rhodes said.

"In a conversation with Holbrooke in 2010, I asked him why the United States did not cut its USD 1 billion a year in military aid to the Pakistan army. He said cutting aid was 'off the table' because it would only increase distrust of the United States. 'This cannot be a transactional relationship'," he told me.

In his book, Rhodes writes that many people in the US Government were against Holbrooke's style of functioning.

"USAID officials and some American diplomats complained that Holbrooke repeatedly shifted the focus of the American assistance in Pakistan," he wrote.

In his book, which hit the stands this week, Rhodes gives an insight into the working of Holbrook, his tensed relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the public engagement and focus on Pakistan and the manner in which he was sidelined by the White House.

In January 2009, Holbrooke was appointed as President Barack Obama's special adviser on Pakistan and Afghanistan, a frustrating assignment which was said to have caused his health to deteriorate.

He served until he died from complications of an aortic dissection on December 13, 2010 at the age of 69.

Rhodes, who spent eight years in Afghanistan and Pakistan where he was held captive for seven months by the Taliban, argues the case for easing the India-Pakistan tension, which he says is important to stabilize the broader Islamic world.

He argues the Obama Administration in its second term should stop providing aid to the Pakistan Army, :yahoo: :agree:alleging that it suppresses democracy.

The book has been listed by the Foreign Policy magazine as 25 top "Books to Read" in 2013.

The US has to stop giving aid to criminals in Pakistan. You cannot say you were tough on them and gave them 1 billion dollars. People will laugh at you, then slap you.

USA should be rational and see what it have got return of the billions of dollars of Aid to pak.

Agreed

The US situation viz a viz Pak aid is like cutting off the fix for an addict . Shutting off the fix abruptly will lead to more harm than good.

Gradually does it.

Whenever I've kicked a bad habit in my life, I've done it in a big bang approach, going cold turkey. You see the US always gets what it wants from Pak in exchange for this. The addiction is on the US side to give us aid.

Ever tried to stop smoking gradually. Never works. Make a clean break, that is the way to go.
In the instance tha you are speaking about, its a "junkie-pusher" relationship. Then work out who stands to lose and who stands to gain.

I am on the 6th week of quitting . The ' urge ' is over - the impulse remains.

You cant be serious !

Have you EVER heard of an employer paying an employee for services that are worth less than what he's paying?

The US in the end has ALWAYS gotten his way in Pakistan because of this money. I'm dead serious.

So, Pakistan and Afghanistan killed the American Ambassador?

Late Richard Holbrook may rot in hell along with his peers who are still busy destroying peace and creating unrest in the world. Who has heard USA admitting that it is supporting rebels in Libya, Syria, Iran, China, Pakistan, Bahrain, Venezuela, Cuba, and a host of African countries?

And who does not know that india supported terrorist Bengali rebels in East Pakistan, jay Sind in west Pakistan, LTTE in Sri Lanka in the past and still supporting terrorist TTP and BLA in Pakistan, Dali Lama in Tibet (part of China), Maldives, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, etc.

NO one hears their governments or generals admitting to these crimes, so who are the bigger liars?

So who is the bigger liar?

Oh I love it how these yanks organize the largest insurgency against the Soviets and teach Pakistanis the tricks and then they turn back and say ' its not civilized'.

A Smoker never Quits. They only take a break :P

I think the US - Pakistani relationship will turn very cold once US leave Afghanistan in 2014. US will leave just enough resources so that they don't have any direct threats. Other than that it will mostly be back to the period between 1990-2000 for Pakistan.
