Rethinking Pakistan's National Security Policy

In conversation with Dr. Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan’s National Security Advisor (NSA), this episode discusses formulation of National Security Policy, focusing more on geo-economic and connectivity in the region. How the National Security Division works; and what is the role of National Security Advisor? Why is National Security Policy document still missing after three years? What is the difference between focusing on the traditional security and non-traditional security such as geo-economics? Do we need to reduce Pakistan’s military budget to provide for country’s economic upbringing? What is current situation of Afghanistan? World has the perception that Pakistan is soft on Taliban government, do you think that’s the case? Where does the government stand on negotiations with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan? Is idea of mainstreaming religious extremist party such as TLP going to hit us in the future? How do you see Afghanistan’s security and significance in terms of connectivity projects in the region? Do you think peace is a possibility with India? Pakistan got criticism over Afghanistan’s situation; where do you this is going with the cold response from the US? After changing focus of US policy, is there any utility of Pakistan being an ally for the US? Has government failed to formulate and project the national narrative not only abroad but within the country? Is the geo-economics the crown jewel of new policy? Is the idea behind National Action Plan lost already? As a National Security Advisor, how do you see civil-military relations in Pakistan? What is government’s position on improving Information security / Cybersecurity infrastructure in Pakistan? Where is the middle ground on the regulations over global social media platform in Pakistan? Do we have an understanding in security establishment that Pakistan has to realign itself with the changing security paradigms? Where do you see Pakistan in next 30 years in global context?

I think you forgot to post the link.

Thanks for sharing. And thank God for this channel and Muzamil's other work which is level-headed and an excellent/much needed break from 'talk shows' on TV (which I stopped watching, like all rational people, over a decade ago).

I met MY at his office in the PMO in 2019 when he was newly minted. We prayed maghreb in the mosque room and had a short chat. Sharp guy with some good kids on his team (the majority of which were hired through advertisements).

Unfortunately, none of this is that radical. And everybody I know in the agencies that carry out the real work either don't take him seriously or view him with extreme suspicion --- so the actual policy/implementation side is a big question mark.

Also, the propensity for catchphrases in GHQ and PMO makes it sound like 'geoeconomics' is some new, revolutionary thing --- whereas there's nothing new about it, and Pakistan has been talking/thinking about regional connectivity since decades (and implementing it before his arrival). Like politics, all interstate economics is affected by geography. But everyone needs to brand their ideas to improve their legitimacy.

It's nice to have someone who can at least speak decently and challenge entrenched narratives.

We must rethink everything, right from identity to economy.

I hope "agencies" start working with other smaller parts of the state such as MY and use all assets effectively and efficiently.

Ps: we desperately need to counter propaganda against Pakistan on international level.

@waz @LeGenD @The Eagle

I was thinking if we could make a private room for national security related policy for the prominent members where they could share ideas behind closed doors. There is so many things that at times can't be shared in the public domain so I was thinking it would be really nice to have a private chat room. I will invite the prominent Pakistani members of the forum if you were to create one
