Seriously if the Kashmiris vote for independence i would let them go...we are a democratic republic. But there needs to be serious CBM or confidence building measures between India and Pakistan before this takes place as how can we trust Pakistan to not forment another rebellion as in the 1950s and from the late 80s till now? What the Pakistanis are doing is actually against the interests of ordinary Kashmiris. If there is sufficient trust between India and Pakistan, this referendum about the future of Kashmir can be held in both Azad Kashmir and IOK and settle once and for all this festering issue. Then there will no longer be an excuse for this stupid self defeating rivalry while the rest of the world rapidly advances. . DO i expect this to happen? No.

I am not talking now..i am talking 20-50 years into the future..just imagine this scenario..Pakistan's population has exploded, there are now close to 300 million people. Severe climate change has resulted in drastic water reduction from the Indus. Pakistan facing mounting insurgency by Islamic radicals, total economic collapse launches another covert strike a la Mumbai, this time the casualties in India are catastrophic, 1000s dead. The pressure to India to respond is overwhelming, India launches strikes on designated targets. Pakistan seeing that it has nothing left to lose preemptively nukes India. This is scenario i don't wish to play out.

Look i am just being pragmatic...why don't we hold out the possibility of a referendum in Kashmir on the question of Independence out as a carrot for Pakistan. Only if Pakistan dismantles all its terrorist groups, stops cross border infiltration, opens its borders to trade, gives us MFN, allows us to build pipelines to Iran and run them for a period of 10 years without interruption can we even discuss the issue of referendum.

Good Scenario building ; however This is not a new idea or concept

If Pakistan continues like this ; over a period of time Pakistan will loose all
credibility and sympathy and India will NUKE it first rather than wait to get nuked
