Coachella is back for a second round this weekend, bringing with it a whole lot of cultural appropriation. From kimonos and headdresses to bindis and “aztec” prints, this is one trend that just refuses to die. But Hindu and South Asian girls are using selfies and hashtags to bite back. [HASHTAG]#ReclaimTheBindi[/HASHTAG] is a campaign started by an anonymous woman with the aim of educating and empowering, and it’s no coincidence that it’s running concurrently with the festival circuit’s most Instagrammed event. The fact that culture is not a fashion accessory is something we’re still sadly having to drill in. Even worse is the number of people not just wearing “pretty face jewels” but actually taking to social media to angrily defend their actions.

Reclaiming the bindi isn’t just a lesson though. It allows women of the South Asian/South East Asian or Hindu cultures, who are being obscured while Vanessa Hudgens gets her sparkly mug plastered all over the internet, have their time on our timelines. Here are just some of the powerful and timely truths being told about using culture as a fashion trend.

1. You can’t have your lunchables and eat them too.

2. It’s possible to appreciate a culture without appropriating it.
It’s not just possible, it’s actually easier.

3. There was never any deep meaning behind Coachella.
Even when it was cool.

4. The bindi has spiritual and religious meaning, not just cultural meaning.
So it’s not good to wear one while you’re getting drunk and grinding on people.

5. But feeling super namaste after your morning green juice is an equally bad excuse.

6. Bindis have been a thing before Coachella even existed.

7. Desi girls just do it better.

8. Wearing eyeglasses is not a form of cultural appropriation.
Well just leave this here though…

Holy crap. So now me wearing a suit is cultural appropriation? Or an Indian chick wearing a pair of jeans?

An entire generation has grown up being told that they are special. Now that they are adults and finally figuring out that they are not, it's not going down too well for them.

American youth are honestly stupid, especially the ethnic youth who claim everything of "theirs" is being appropriated. They even claim non-Indians wearing saris is cultural appropriation:

scroll through 1/2 of these are Indian related. Indian youth in America are really something else.

To think they are going to go off and get married to some chump in India who has no idea of the level of crazy bitch they have ascended to.

One of those SJW Indians was making fun of immigrant Indians as FOBs in the same sentence as claiming whites are appropriating bindis. Truly these girls are insecure of their identity. Makes me sick to my stomach

@Nihonjin1051 what do you make of this stupid notion of cultural appropriation seeing as you are a prof in psychology?

These SJWs are even upset over this girl

Look how cute she looks in a sari (minus her hands).

@levina your thoughts over this "movement".

.
I am all with them wearing sarees and everything but they wear them on occasions like halloween's. It is not a costume mate but regular clothes!
