German Bombardment of Madras in WWI, 1914

Madras was the only Indian city to come under attack by forces of the Central Powers during WWI. The bombardment was initiated by the German light cruiser Emden at the start of the war in 1914.

Oil tanks on fire in the harbor following the bombardment of Madras by SMS Emden.

Angel!! He was a bigot and racist.
Ofcourse!
Nobody talks of the cocentration camps that Churchill started in SouthAfrica...nor about the "savages" he shot.History is kind to him..very kind.
When Mahatma Gandhi began his peaceful resistance Churchill raged that he ought to be lain bound hand and foot at the gates of Delhi and then trampled on by an enormous elephant with the new Viceroy seated on its back.He hated Indians and was single handedly responsible for the famine that broke out in Bengal somewhere in mid 1940s (AFAIK Amartya Sen proved it that happened only because of imperial policies of British).
I am sure you knew all this :)
History is always written by the victors, Hitler was evil, but he was not the only evil.

This link has a good debate: Joseph Stalin killed more people than Hitler. My question is how does Hitler get all the publicity?
Right!!!
Stalin was another specimen.

Guru of extremist revolutionaries. Master mind in attempt to assassinate Lord Hardinge way back in 1912 when Indians did not even hear of any one called Gandhi. A hugely respected figure in Japan too.
My history is atrocious...i was caught yawwwning many times during the history classes. :P

I apologize if you were offended....but it was actually about a joke on a pic that @levina once had as her DP here....i think it was the same old man!
If my memory serves me right ..hmmm

then I didnt have Rabindranath Tagore in my DP.:D
I think i had Sam Manekshaw in my DP once. :)
Wow!! That place looks as a perfect hide out for dacoits. I came to know about Sultana in Jim Corbett's autobiography. He was a master of disguise, a magnanimous figure with a lot of romantic mysticism attached with his personality. Corbett's account on hunting him down is a fantastic read.
Dacoits remind me of just one place,Chambal.
Chambal ravines were familiar with neighs of horses and gun shot of dacoits. Have you crossed that area??

Ha ha. Sometimes Churchill's soreness about Gandhi is understandable. Especially when a true flag bearer of British Imperialism is advised to open the gates of Britain to the Nazis for peaceful self annihilation, you can guess what reaction from the man would be. He once expressed his doubt about Gandhi's fasting and said the naked fakir must be having glucose with his water.

Have you crossed that area??

No. But in a famous Bengali magazine called Desh, we used to read a series called "Behaad bagi bandook". It was precisely about chambal rough confusing terrain and the ruthless rouges.

glucose with water??
I could not stop laughing when i read that.

I remember Churchill calling gandhi a half naked seditious fakir...or something to that effect. And when Gandhi went on fast Churchill hoped he would starve to death. He despised Indians so much.

Somehow Churchill's imagination comes close to @Armstrong 's.lolzz

Granted that Churchill and my views on Indians are in complete consonance but I wouldn't call Gandhi a half-naked fakir because as Ms.Naidu once remarked 'it cost a fortune to keep the Mahatma poor' !

@levina Apa - I'm on my 6th Energy Drink today; my head hurts !

I could not stop laughing when i read that.
When I first read it could not stop laughing either. Churchill writes to Linlithgow, "have heard that Gandhi usually has glucose in his water when doing his various fasting antics. Would it be possible to verify this?"
He even said," I do not think Gandhi has the slightest intention of dying and I imagine he has been eating better meals than I have for the last week." Simply hilarious

Right!
She said that...
But she meant that if the Mahatma wanted to travel by third class in a train then a whole bogey had to be cleared so that he could be secure.
Gandhi was smarter...he started walking instead. lolzz

One reason why you fall sick so often!!
What 've you been drinking?? red bull???
do you know your kidneys will go for a six if you drink more than 2 or 3 energy drinks everyday. I wish I was there to give you a tight slap on your face everytime you drank one.

I haven't slept in 2 days; I've got some work to do ! :(

I'm multi-tasking right now; doing 3 things - work, PDF & some more work !

I usually don't energy drinks but it was either that or a couple of cups of black coffee 'cause I've got to stay up & get the work done ! :undecided:

I can't recall what the exact quotes were but I do remember Pyarelal making a similar observation about how the austerity cost quite a lot; I have a faint recollection about something said about a goat & goats milk or something like that ! :undecided:

Oh god!!
I might be taking this thread in a tangential direction but I like this discussion.
You know Gandhi was an old man and like others in their 70s he too slept very little and was very careful about what he ate and drank.
Gandhi wanted his followers also to be like him ie sleep for 4 hours and diet on raisins and goat's milk.
But as far as i remember in one of his books Gandhi himself had said that "animal's milk is not for human beings" and that we should not drink it.Gandhi ji had not heard of " practice what you preach". :D
