Rampal power project near Sundarban opposed

DHAKA, FEB 15: Leaders of different environmental organisations and green activists on Friday urged the government not to go forward with Rampal coal-fired power project without having opinion from environmentalists, economists, politicians and representatives of civil society.

Addressing a view-exchange meeting on Power Development Board's report on environmental impact assessment over the proposed Rampal coal-fired power project beside the Sundarban, they claimed that the report was based on false and forged information. The leaders said, if people do not come forward to force the government to stop the coal-fired power project in Rampal, it would particularly destroy the Sundarban, known as protection centre from the natural calamities.

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA), Centre for Human Rights Movement, Green Voice, Save the Sundarbans and Bagerhat Unnayan Committee jointly organised the function at Dhaka Reporters' Unity.
Eminent columnist and journalist Syed Abul Maksud said, the government should take its next step after reevaluating the impacts of setting up the proposed coal-fired power plant.
“We would request the government to discuss the impacts of Rampal power project with environmentalists, economists, politicians and representatives of the civil society,” he said.
Maksud termed PDB’s report on environmental impact assessment, full of “false and “forged” information. “It will be a severe undertaking for the environment if the government wants to set up the project without taking the experts’ opinion,” he added. He said, it is a political decision of the government and they have to take the people’s opinion as well as technical aspects into consideration.

DR Md Abdul Motin, General Secretary of BAPA, termed the PDB report as a destroy document to protect the interest of vested quarters and destruction of the Sundarbans. He demanded repealing the initial environment assent of PDB.

The BAPA leader also urged the government to shift the project from the Sundarban site to a suitable and safer place without using any adjacent areas of the mangrove forest.Engr Enamul Haque said, the project that has been taking forward without environmental impact assessment, would cause damages to thousands of people in Rampal and to the environment and biodiversity of the Sundarban.

He apprehended that the project would benefit India threatening Bangladesh’s sovereignty.
Ruhin Hossain Prince, Advocate Mujahidul Islam, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
