Not really fair though, he was a politician and not a military man. The US Secretary of Defense more often than not was also civilian. You can't compare him to Wei Fenghe, who literally spent his entire career around ballistic missiles.

I agree ... another Indian soldier getting blown up by a mine or being abducted by the PLA would absolutely strengthen Chinese leverage against India in the talks

Countries and Army are not mafia dons. It wont work with abductions of civilians/soldiers.
