DAWN.COM | National | Raisani offers Gwadar for Nato supplies

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani said on Wednesday that a peaceful and stable Pakistan was necessary not only for peace in the region but also peace in the world.

During a meeting with the military attaché of British High Commission, Charles Sattorini, the chief minister said: “Peace in Pakistan is linked to peace in Afghanistan.”

Mr Raisani discussed with the British official various issues relating to war against terrorism. He said Pakistan was playing an important role in the war and had rendered great sacrifices.

He said Pakistan’s economy had been affected adversely by its worst floods, adding that the country needed help and cooperation from the international community.

He said that Pakistan wanted peace in the region.

Talking about supply of goods to Nato and foreign forces in Afghanistan, Mr Raisani offered the use of Gwadar port, adding that this would promote economic activity in the province.

He said despite limited resources, the provincial government was trying to provide security to Nato vehicles. “If Nato and Isaf provide training and equipment to police and Levies personnel in Balochistan we can produce better results,” he added.

i think this was the one of the rare time when he said something good..

lok, we are not going to block NATO supplies for long time ie on a strategic note. these blokads that we witnessed last week was more of diplomatic then strategic, it was just to register our protest against NATO air space violations.

now, if the supplies are to keep comming why not route them via Gawadar, creating new oppurtunities for the people of this region, share lod of already well developed Karachi ports and bring good name to Gawadar!
even it will be helpfull for NATO as transict time will be lesser.

i guess some of NATO supplies are already routed through Gawadar.

regards!

Of course the supplies will continue but Gawadar should not become a militarized base. We dont know how the war in Afghanistan will play in the future. Once you give a base it becomes very difficult to take it back. In my opinion its not a Good Idea.
