Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (Safron) Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch on Saturday said if former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif accepts the appointment as head of a 39-nation military alliance of Muslim states he will become controversial.

“If Raheel Sharif takes up the appointment, he will become controversial and I feel it might lessen the respect he has earned,” said Baloch while speaking on DawnNews Doosra Rukh.

Baloch said he has had a good relations with Sharif as he served as Baloch’s chief of staff when he was a corps commander.

“For us he has become a source of pride and we would never want his reputation to suffer,” added the minister for states and frontier regions.

Baloch also expressed concern and said the appointment as head of the alliance will not have the same chances of success as in the Pakistan Army as it will be a “hop scotch alliance and we do not know what the system will be”.

Earlier, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the government had given its green signal for Sharif to take charge as head of the military alliance of Muslim states.

However, the minister said official procedures have not yet been completed in this regard.

The headquarters of the military alliance would be based in Riyadh.

Pakistan had initially found itself in the crosshairs of Middle Eastern politics as Saudi Arabia named it as part of its newly formed military alliance of Muslim countries meant to combat terrorism, without first getting its consent.

However, after initial ambiguity, the government had confirmed its participation in the alliance, but had said that the scope of its participation would be defined after Riyadh shared the details of the coalition it was assembling.

The coalition was envisaged to serve as a platform for security cooperation, including provision of training, equipment and troops, and involvement of religious scholars for dealing with extremism.

The Saudi government had surprised many countries by announcing that it had forged a coalition for coordinating and supporting military operations against terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan.

Iran, Saudi Arabia's archrival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen.

Be Afraid . Be very very Afraid Houthi Rebels. You probably don't know what is coming in your way.

I can feel the pain and discouragement in the statement of Iranian Mullahs. The same Iran is trying to lecture Pakistan which gave away all the evidence against A Q Khan to USA and UN to protect itself.

Isnt this alliance fighting ISIS, and not the illegal war in Yemen?

Stop living in fear and being "politically right". Let Gen. Raheel lead the Muslim world and fight against terrorism in the world. Qadir Baloch what are you afraid of? Terrorists are already killing your children within the country and beyond.. let somebody stand and let somebody save your future.

Its time when you join the war against terrorism instead of standing against it.

Nope, it is the Arab coalition of 8 nations that is fighting that war in Yemen..The legitimate government of Yemen is also part of this coalition as well as all of these nations are part of the New Islamic coalition against terrorism..

Arab coalition is fighting against Houthis as mentioned by SC. The new alliance has nothing to do with Yemen

The main aim of the Islamic coalition against terrorism is to help militarily any Muslim nation subject to terrorism operations, on the condition that it is upon request from the said nation's government.. the other main function will be to uproot the terrorism from the Muslim world by attacking its ideology and finances..

It is to some extent similar to the Raad-ul-Fasaad campaign that has just started in Pakistan..

Are you sure?

"Gen Raheel Sharif accepts the appointment as head of a 39-nation military alliance of Muslim states"

"The Saudi government had surprised many countries by announcing that it had forged a coalition for coordinating and supporting military operations against terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan."

knowing Raheel Sharif and his earlier request to include Iran, I really doubt he would willingly take part in any Yemen campaign.

But this will not work out in my opinion in its current condition..When Military and economic conditions are not on a same page then alliances are bound to fail..For e.g there is no reason PA should participate its troop when helping Oman who has military relations with India and has listening base of India in Oman..Same goes for Kuwait..
I am very much for military alliance among Muslim nations but that should build on equality ..Not that on need to need basis or one time pay cheque thing..When common paksitani or other people will see benefits for them more as compared to non-muslim nations people this will work out and majority will support this.

I have serious problems when my country's ex-army chief is getting paid by a foreign power to fight on foreign soil

. .
you might not have a problem.

I would have a problem if my country's army chief did the same

Does his loyalties lie to his country ? Or to his new employer who is going to pay him a lot more than his old employer ? Hope you see the issue
There is no question of being loyalist here..He is going to take over this after the approval..He is simply an individual even if he is more loyal to his employer how does it effect Pakistan ?

Well, neither Oman nor Kuwait have terrorism issues like Syria, Iraq, Libya and Egypt are facing, one can add the sporadic but regular terrorist attacks in Tunisia and Algeria.. those are the main issues for this coalition, as well as preventing any new spreading of terrorism by being pro-active..
