In Europe in general many people thought it would be a political decision and India would go for US fighters, but MoD and IAF showed that we have other requirements in this deal.
In India Rafale was a front runner from the start, we knew IAF wanted Mirage 2000-5s earlier and will have a preference for Rafale for similar reasons as well. However, Indian public were often splitted between Rafale and EF, although mainly because EFs good PR reputation, not because it's real capabilities.
Without political reasons, Rafale was the logical choice for India, because it was leading in capabilities, costs, logistics and experience advantages of IAF and most likely at ToT too.

Rafale never was rejected, just a media myth, which IAF denied directly as false news. There wasn't any official MoD statement released, neither to public, nor to Dassault or French government.
Imo it was just a placed news to put pressure on Dassault for whatever reasons.
