Should it be assumed that for a wholehearted operation people need to die on equal intervals, otherwise we relax? It is utter lack of professionalism and manifestation of bad governance

The impoverished but proud parents would have been happy the day their sons got selected for the police force. With lots of prayers their moms would have sent them to their training academy to earn them the title of a Policeman. But one thing they didn’t know was that a few other sons of equally impoverished parents have already been blessed and assured by their handlers with a guaranteed passage to paradise. However, there is a small caveat here; both were on a collision course. Thus, the latter self-detonated to kill those would-be-cops – 60 of them. What a day that would have been for those parents!

Terrorism is not ending. And there is no end in sight either. It always comes back, one way or the other and in different shades with different targets.

Earlier, on the fateful day of December 16, 2014, after school going kids were slaughtered by the barbarians, the present government, the entire political class and military devised a National Action Plan (NAP), that was aimed at flushing out all terrorists, their sympathizers and the hate-mongers. Why does the dust of time always cover national tragedies? Some of them simply shouldn't be forgotten. The NAP lost its steam soon after some initial breakthroughs and decline in countrywide terrorist activities without realizing that the terrorists simply went underground and postponed their activities. They are war hardened and very committed, it was a naive approach to lose interest and cut the zeal that was displayed in the initial days of APS tragedy.

Now, after this fresh episode of carnage, we can feel the emphasis again on 'intensifying' operation against such elements. This essentially meant that we lost the appetite before, and now because scores of people have been killed again we are going to renew our NAP commitments. It is unfortunate but should it be assumed that for a wholehearted operation people need to die on equal intervals, otherwise we relax? It is utter lack of professionalism and manifestation of bad governance. In countries where welfare of people is the primordial point, all resources are appropriated first to secure their lives.

It is not enough to just root out the active terrorists in the field. If you kill one, there would be ten more to replace him. The full focus should on the sweeping reforms regarding the origins and nurseries of such religion-based terrorism. The national narrative regarding the NAP is absent from social media. This is the platform where narrow-mindedness and hate-mongers roam free. They dominate this scene. If someone wants to deny, it is their choice but the major radicalization is carried through the use of social media. Now it is understandable that no single government can regulate all aspects of social media, but this is very much doable to counter the hate-driven narrative being funneled through it, to the gullible minds and impressionable teens. When the federal government has the resources to control the electronic and print media by filling it with government-friendly commentaries, a fraction of those resources can be channelized to this unbridled cyber-space. A counter narrative needs to be built with full force. This is the only way you can cut the future supply-lines of 'wanna-be' militants.

The system of mosques and madaris certainly needs to be regulated by the government. Every single resident of each of the neighborhoods of Pakistan knows who openly vouches for the extremists’ cause. There is no need to pick them up or kill them in cold-blood, rather they need to be cautioned and told to follow the line. In some cases the same elements can be effectively used to counter the very same ideals that they previously advocate for. Unfortunately, the national media is not immune to their sympathizers either. If government doesn't know about them, then I must say they have no right to govern in the first place.

Extremism was spread very systematically in the nook and corners of Pakistan with all the precision techniques that are applied in making it an effective and luring propaganda. The same amount of effort is required to undo its potency. The only silver-lining is that this could be done much faster, given the new means of dissemination of information.

All of the above could only be done when utmost sincerity to the cause is felt, otherwise nothing would be achieved. And we would only see the knee-jerk statements and actions that fizzle out as soon as the news disappears from the media and goes to the sleep-mode only when awkwardly awaken by the follow-up tragedy.

So true...and unfortunate ...the article so rightly points out tht we need a tragedy at frequent intervals to take us out from our deep sulmber and renew our resolve against terrorism, otherwise, we just forget and relax... Sad....this has become our national attitude..

.
It will take time for terror elements to be completely eliminated we will have unfortunate events like that for more years until the border with Afghanistan is open we will have issues in Kp and Balochistan

Operation only trims the branches we need to go after the roots

Don't you think we give them chance?
Why there are lacks in the security of a Police training school??

Okay... I do accept you can't secure a bazar or public park.. but a school that produces the protectors of nation...why security has gaps there to allow the pigs to take their turn??

While you already know your neighbours are seeking for retaliation... They would find for a pain inducing place and then stab knife there.
The security standards need to be raised.. Hell desperate..!!

we just forget and relax... Sad....this has become our national attitude..

No the truth is...

The problem isn't India or the BLA or other terrorist groups, it's the Pakistani establishment itself. The complacency they provide for individuals who aren't the children of the leadership.

How can a police academy have two watch guards? If what we're hearing is true, there was no security arrangement at the academy. Just guards placed for show.

There should have been guards at the entrance gate, at/around the building entrances, patrols along the boundary wall. Not to mention having armed police inside the hostels themselves. Or the availability of weapons for the cadets.

Guess this type of security is only available on "fool-proof" holidays or for the protection of peacocks belonging to the Political dynasties.

Well bro you are absolutely right about the lack of security arrangements made by police. The problem is lack of training of police officers to deal with such type of attacks. Our police is trained to catch normal criminals like theifs or for petty criminal. Not full scale insurgencies. You can just imagine how much by just this fact that their is no swat teams in our police departments to deal with such type of situations ane every time we call army to deal with situation. And problem again lies in our political leadership who don't allow our police to flourish and always politicize the police. Unless and until police is not updated and unpoliticized I am afraid this war will continue

What you are suggesting is factually too big for us to do. What instead we can do easily is go serious on our own security measures. Layered defence to be made mandatory for every institution. Cadets to take guard of their barracks in turns (like 3 cadets every night for every hall of 50+ cadets and should be armed) etc etc etc

In tandem we can start with beefing border security as well as well as forming 'peace committees' in blocks/sectors of our cities

But so long as the sentry on duty has 8 Gb memory card containing 25 movies and 1000 songs, and the cadets are all asleep except for the unarmed cadet on duty who is dosing in his bunk, and the guys on the main gate are discussing IK and NS sipping tea nothing is going to change. We need SERIOUS security revamp inside the police and FC. Army has gotten better with time but I tell you the 8 Gb memory card thing is still a FACT as far as armed sentries on posts are concerned.

Police is for the security of just a VVIP person... Let the public go to hell...!!!
It's a fool nation they could calm it by a Ratti rataai statement... and we do forget it after 2 or 3 days... I hate this thing of my nation.

Yes bro again the core problem lies in our leadership no one has ever thought or even given single concentration on our police department and thana culture. The same old police still exist who use lathi to deal with criminals. Chotu gang which you mentioned were armed with assault rifles,RPG, anti personal mines, anti armour mines . Where our police had just old rifles and no air support and as I mentioned earlier no swat teams to deal with these type of idiots.

I think we have started working on it. This is way too messed up than it seems.

You have tens and thousands of Afghans who have obtained genuine CNIC through fraud. You have millions of uneducated lunatics in house willing to go rogue over a few thousand. You have 1000s of people who are willing to kill on one pretext or the other; starting from religious grounds to political enmity etc. So manpower is there. All it needs is a littler persuasion or manipulation. And plots can travel through fenced border as well. So, I say improve the security setup in house to make it more costly for them to plan and execute. Its like walk in the park at the moment and we are seeing the results already

Well it is also blessing in disguise if we really want to work it in our way.Our Military and law enforcement abilities have increased since we joined WOT. You can just check the uniform and gear of Pakistan Army before we join WOT and currently. But the major mistake made by Pakistani Establishment was the calculation of risk that was ahead of us. They thought they can subdue the north and south Waziristan tribes very quickly but it turned out to be extreme fight
