I am pretty sure with all those people around those soldiers were there to put up a show. They were not guarding anything. The soldier could have marched around the boy

The soldiers are professionals and not told to stop or divert. The young boy was not kept under supervision by his mum and ran towards them. The soldier actually stepped over him, and did check on the boy after the route was done. So no harm there.
As a general comment it is annoying that many tourists think that they are there for their entertainment or fun, they are there to GUARD the Queen.
