ISLAMABAD:

Quaid-i-Azam University has broken into the top 100 universities of Asia while it is listed among the top 500 in the world, according to the latest rankings issued by the Times Higher Education (THE) at the 2018 Asia Universities Summit in China, local media reported on Thursday.

This year, Pakistan only had one varsity in the top 500 and a total of four in the top 1,000 universities in the world.

Located in Islamabad, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), was ranked at 79 in the top 100 Asia University Rankings 2018, after making a considerable jump from its previous ranking in the 121-130 band.

The country’s top public research university was ranked 466 in the world behind Qatar University and Reykjavík University of Iceland.

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology was the next best university in the country, ranked at 125 on the list for Asian universities, up from its position in the 141-150 band last year. It was ranked 642 in the world between Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia and Coventry University of UK.

The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) was ranked at 727 in the world, below National University of Science and Technology (MISiS) of Russia but above the National Sun Yat-Sen University of Taiwan. In Asia, NUST was ranked at 162, sharing it with Universiti Sains Malaysia.

The University of Agriculture in Faisalabad came in at 802 in the global rankings, below Adam Mickiewicz University of Poland and above Ain Shams University of Egypt. In Asian rankings, it was ranked at 251.

Other Pakistani universities that managed to grab a position for themselves on the list are the Bahauddin Zakariya University of Multan, University of Lahore, University of Peshawar, PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore and the Government College University Lahore.

The editorial director of global rankings at Times Higher Education Phil Baty congratulated Pakistan for having 10 universities on the list.

“It is a fantastic achievement that Pakistan now has 10 universities in the Asia rankings and that its two leading universities have risen up the table,” he said, adding that research must be made a priority if a country wants to stand out from its competition in Asia.

The latest Asian rankings feature over 350 universities, including 10 universities from Pakistan, three more than in the 2017 list.

By comparison, India had 42 universities in the Asian rankings, including two in the top 50 and seven in the top 100. India also boasted two varsities in the global top 500.

The National University of Singapore was the top-ranked Asian university while Oxford topped the charts of the global rankings.

Pakistan has been rated a ‘Rising Star’ in research multiple times over the last couple of years by ScienceWatch.com, a Thompson Reuters website which tracks trends and performance in research by analyzing its database of scientific papers and citations. The ‘Rising Star’ rankings are published every two months to acknowledge new entrants, by identifying the scientists, institutions, countries, and journals which have shown the largest percentage increase in total citations. In the May issue of the ratings, Pakistan was named a ‘rising star’ in two areas, ‘Materials Science’ and ‘Plant & Animal Science’. Amongst other countries of the region, Bangladesh was also listed as a rising star in ‘Computer Science’ and ‘Pharmacology & Toxicology’. Iran was named in four categories, and Qatar and UAE in one category each.

This is not the first time that Pakistan has been named in these ratings recently. In fact, Pakistan’s record has been very consistent since March 2008, the earliest ratings that are available on the website. Here’s a listing of Pakistan’s mention in the ‘rising star’ ratings:

* March 2008: Engineering, Mathematics
* May 2008: Materials Science
* July 2008: Engineering
* September 2008: Computer Science, Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, Plant and Animal Sciences (5 areas!)
* November 2008: Engineering
* January 2009: Computer Science
* March 2009: Computer Science
* May 2009: Materials Science, Plants and Animal Sciences
* July 2009: None

Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad, the country’s top university in terms of the number of publications per year, has also been recognized as a ‘rising star’ institution, in Jan 2009 and July 2008 issues, both times in the area of ‘Engineering’.

The ratings are based on the largest percentage increase and not the absolute numbers, and therefore, cannot be used to quantify research productivity in absolute terms. However, they definitely demonstrate the trend of a substantial increase in international publications from Pakistan compared to previous years. It is very healthy that a number of different areas are covered in these past two years, showing an across the board enhancement of research productivity.

Pakistan’s silent revolution

Under the leadership of eminent chemist Dr Salimuzzaman Siddiqui and Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, the institute became a magnet for more funding and projects from around the world. Over a period of time, it received $30 million in funding from various countries. Recently, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) donated $ 40 million for research on regional and tropical diseases. Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, a renowned chemist and the former chairman of Higher Education Commission said,

We focus on diseases common in Pakistan and in the region as the developed world does not consider the ailments of poor as a priority anymore.

The HEJ institute also won the IDB prize for science and technology in 2004 and 2010.

Currently, the center has one of the largest PhD programs in the country in the fields of natural product chemistry, plant biotechnology, computational biology, spectroscopy and other disciplines at the frontiers of science.

Two of the major segments of the project, called the Earthquake Model of the Middle East Region (EMME), were studied and compiled by the Cowasjee Earthquake Center.

According to Rafi, the research at CESNED focuses on studying earthquakes with respect to civil engineering and construction, and has acquired latest equipment with the help of the Higher Education Commission.

“Professors from Germany are coming to our center to train local experts,” Rafi stated.

The center also has in it’s armoury a huge hydraulic machine which can mimic earthquakes and tests various construction materials used in quake-prone zones.
