Messy work stations are thousands times better than cleaned untouched equipments sitting idly in labs. I have have worked in aerospace and engineeing companies, from aesthetics point view there is always clutter, worn out lab equipments, used and scraped surfaces - this wear and tear shows there is meaningful work taking place. If you want shiny and clean surfaces, stay way from engineering, go to a discipline like finance for example.
