Moscow - Raed Jaber
In the first concrete step to tighten his country’s “military grip” on Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the defense and foreign ministries to hold talks on getting additional land and naval rights in Syria.

The new Russian decision comes after Putin’s recent decision to appoint Moscow’s ambassador in Damascus, Alexander Efimov, as his special envoy for developing bilateral relations between the two states.

The president’s instruction, posted on the government’s legal information web portal on Friday, said Putin instructed the two ministries to sign a protocol to the agreement with Damascus on deploying Moscow’s air task force that stipulates the transfer of additional facilities and water area to it.

Based on the protocol, Damascus will transfer more real estate and water territory to the Russian military.

The move comes a few days after the arrival of Russian military forces to the Fish Khabour crossing at the Syrian-Iraqi-Turkish border, which was considered an area controlled by the Americans.

Russia and Syria have inked a 49-year agreement on deploying the Russian air task force at the Hmeimim air base.

Separately, Turkey enhanced its military presence at several observation points in the northwest of Syria, two days after the killing of a Turkish soldier in the area.

On the other hand, various reports from past few weeks are indicating that Moscow is considering sizing down its involvement in the war due to economic problems back home. Russia has spent billions to prop up Assad but cracks are appearing now in the regime's inner circle as well. There is no end to the war in sight and Russia cant just keep spending money there.

The insurgency in South Syria has also rejuvenated. More problems. Anyways, Assad isn't willing to compromise and agree to a political solution.

Assad will never hold an election. Not a real one. Plus Turkey backed faction isn't friendly to Russia and Russia won't recognize its legitimacy.

. .
That is correct. However, the Russians cant afford to keep pumping them money forever.

Turkey is in way worse shape than Russia and Turkey is fighting in Libya. Anyway, the point is, money isn't an issue. Russia is deploying more forces in Syria and now especially in Libya.

How long will Iran and Russia keep accruing debt for Assad to stay in power? Has he even paid back any money you guys gave him?

Syria is on dialysis, time to pull the cord and talk about a unity government in post-Assad Syria.

Damascus is one of the oldest and most important cities in the world. No way Russia and Iran give Damascus back to Turkey.

. .
Money is a major issue for Russia in the long term. They have an economy smaller than Italy. Less money means they cant prop up the Assad regime indefinitely.

Money is printed. Money is unlimited. Only massive casualties like in Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq can force imperialists like Russians and Americans leave. Nothing else can make them leave.

. . .
People talk about Russia and Iran "accruing debt" fighting in Syria against terrorists, like as if it's going to break the bank. Talk of america, drowning in debt ... $26 trillion in public sector debt and $50 trillion in private sector debt. It's sorta rich coming from someone with little to no connection with reality!!!

. .
There are only 2 Leaders I would really want to meet one day ( if I ever get a Chance ) Putin and Erdogan .. as a Pakistani, I am some what excited about meeting IK but Putin and Erdogan is whole different level in my opinion ..

@vostok bro any chance to meet or shake hand with commorade ;)

.
Damascus is priceless. No way Russia and Iran will ever withdraw from Damascus. Hell, Erdogan dreams about praying at the Damascus mosque one day. Erdogan failed to take Damascus for Turkey.
