A country like Russia doesn't function like an internet forum.
So what will Russia do if we're neutral? Open another front because "they're against us"? Or sanction their biggest defence customer after they beat Americans to pulp with their fists?
Or sanction us with their zero economic clout?

All they're looking for is a neutral India. It's their best realistic hope.

Understand something, india is not refuses l Russia's biggest defence customer, China is and soon to be followed by KSA. so india's position is 3rd at best. Numbering position aside, I don't think you have fully grasped the depth of the far reaching effects of becoming america's strategic partner yet. It is not as simple as modi falling on Putin's feat, claiming neutrality, and walaa, india can now buy the latest and greatest Russia has to offer. The operative word in what putin said was EXCLUSIVE strategic partnership! That means there is certifiably and verifiably no way for india to back to either being neutral or an american ally. Russia is just not gonna fall for that age old trick where you an ally of their enemy, suddenly claim neutrality, by all sorts latest and greatest Russian weaponry, turn tail yet again becoming their enemy's ally once more and thus giving the enemy a detailed look at Russia's latest and greatest weapons. Doesn't work like that. Turning tail some serious consequences for india and that it why Russia is now saying neutrality is just not good enough, now if you want Russian goodies, you have to Russia EXCLUSIVE control of a number of things did that Russia can keep india in place by way deeply dug in claws so to speak.

China is a snake for Russia and you're oblivious to the true Turko-Russian feelings because of the last one year. We're talking about a NATO member who's one of the biggest fans and absorbers of Western tech!

India is their only reliable big friend because of the lack of borders and India's love for non-sanctioned weapons, as of now. Russia looking for partnership would of course be great for us since it'll give us better deals on weapon maintenance. But the most they will/can desire from us will be not to help the Americans.

It's highly debatable if Neptune data is shared with the Americans. We didn't sign any agreement and thus operates a different spec P8.
They're also linked to our submarines and other assets, which would make data sharing a shot in the foot.
