LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that vigorous help and assistance is being extended to the earthquake affectees of Balochistan and relief goods are being dispatched to the devastated areas on daily basis. He said that Punjab government intends to construct a hospital equipped with modern facilities in Awaran with the donations of the people on the pattern of Swat.

Talking to a delegation of PML-N MPAs here on Thursday he said the recent earthquake has caused large scale devastation in Balochistan. Shahbaz Sharif said that provision of relief and assistance to the earthquake affectees is a religious and national responsibility and Punjab government is standing with its Baloch brethren at this critical hour and he has himself visited the affected areas despite his illness to express solidarity with the earthquake affectees.

He said that provincial ministers, assembly members and senior officers are supervising supply and distribution of relief items while he is personally seeking a report on daily basis. The chief minister said that Punjab government has donated a sum of Rs 100 million to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for rehabilitation of earthquake affectees while members of Punjab cabinet and PML-N MPAs have donated their one month’s salary to the relief fund. Shahbaz Sharif said that besides supply of medicines, blankets, tents and other essential items, delegations of provincial ministers, assembly members and senior officers are also extending help to the people of the affected areas.

He said that a delegation comprising elected representatives and government officers led by Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Sher Ali Gorchani is already monitoring relief activities in Lasbela while on his instructions, second delegation headed by provincial ministers Rana Sanaullah and Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman have reached Rahim Yar Khan for this purpose where a base camp has been set up.

He said that Punjab government has established a liaison office in Lasbela for monitoring relief activities while a comprehensive and coordinated programme has been evolved for the help and assistance of calamity-stricken people under which supply of essential items is continuing on daily basis. The CM said that Director General Punjab Disaster Management Authority has been directed to stay in the earthquake-affected areas of Balochistan till the situation improves.

He said that the appeal made by him to the philanthropists for donation to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of earthquake affectees is yielding positive results and well-to-do persons are donating generously. Shahbaz Sharif appealed to industrialists, traders and other affluent segments of the society to extend all-out help to the calamity-hit people of Balochistan.
