The Punjab Assembly while passing a resolution against National Accountability Bureau Chief Justice Javed Iqbal condemned Ahad Cheema’s arrest and also demanded to repeal the plea bargain law.
NAB in its most recent crackdown investigated Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the accusations of corruption in Ashiyana Housing Scheme. Former DG Lahore Development Authority Ahad Cheema and contractor Shahid Shafiq were also arrested in the case. Punjab bureaucracy is charged over Ahad Cheema’s arrest and has also gone on a work strike.
Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah tabled a resolution against NAB which has been approved by the assembly.
Ashiyana Housing Scheme contractor Shahid Shafiq not tortured, reveal medical reports
Demanding elimination of plea bargain law from NAB laws, the resolution said that the accountability bureau is violating basic human rights.
“NAB not only arrested, harassed a senior government official but is also involved in character assassination. NAB law contradicts human rights and dignity,” the resolution read.
Opposition parties staged a walked out of the session after which the government assembly members approved it in absence of opposition.
PTI on NAB resolution
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan while addressing media in Lahore said: “Pakistan condemns this (NAB) resolution.”
He further questioned if the Sharifs were above the law.
Imran remarked saying that countries do not progress without empowering institutes.
Cheema was arrested last week for alleged misuse of authority in awarding Rs14 billion Ashiyana-e-lqbal project to Lahore Casa Developers, a joint venture (JV) said to be ineligible for the contract.
