Business forum fetches 60 deals of foreign investment
* Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif asks foreign investors not to miss opportunity
LAHORE: The concluding session of the second international seminar on investment opportunities in Punjab saw 60 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) of foreign investment signed on Tuesday.
Addressing the concluding session of the seminar, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the agreements and MoUs signed during the previous seminar in 2015 had been materialised. The chief minister urged foreign investors to invest in Pakistan, and in Punjab, and set up projects to earn profit and provide services to the people.
The Chief Minister said that holding of 2nd business seminar in the provincial capital was a wonderful achievement as hundreds of investors from across the globe had participated in this seminar.
"The seminar has gained success from every respect as more than 400 investors from 26 countries have been gathered under one roof. There is no doubt that it was an expression of confidence of our friendly countries over the investment-friendly policies of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif."
Meanwhile, the chief minister held separate meetings with heads of investment groups and foreign companies attending the international business seminar. During the meetings, detailed discussions were held to promote investment in different sectors in Punjab. Investors belonging to different countries, including China, France, Turkey, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the UK show their consent to investment in different sectors.
They also congratulated the chief minister for successful holding of the seminar and said that "Shahbaz Speed" had become the talk of the town. "We are highly impressed with speedy economic development in Pakistan, which has motivated us to invest here."
The chief minister said that Punjab had emerged as the best province for investment where foreign investment in different sectors, including energy, infrastructure, industrial zones, provision of parking facilities and solid waste management was fully welcomed.
He said that vast opportunities of foreign investment were available in Pakistan, especially in Punjab. He said that quite a number of Chinese and Turkish companies were working with the Punjab government.
Referring to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the chief minister said that investors should take maximum benefit of the multi-billion dollar project by investing in different projects.
He further said that the Punjab government would provide every facility to investors and told that their investment would be fully secured here. Diplomats, envoys from China and Turkey, members of parliament, chief secretary, businessmen from 26 countries and local traders and industrialists attended the seminar.
Separately, the chief minister Tuesday strongly condemned a suicide bomb attack in Manchester, United Kingdom. He expressed his deep sense of sorrow and grief over the loss of precious lives and extended sympathies to the heirs of those killed in the tragic incident.

Lol. Gotta admire the trolling. Let's say India agrees to the creation of a free Khalistan carved from East Punjab ; would West Punjab be as happy to let them have Lahore and Nankana Sahib with the former being the capital of Khalistan?

Hell no, that's Pakistani territory. Punjab belongs to Punjabis. Majority of Punjabis are Muslim. So it should remain with Pakistan.

Most of these investments are not likely to mature, simply because Punjab (& Pakistan) is short of developed Human Resources.
If the government really does wish to improve the growth rate and chance of sustaining growth, it must invest in the educational system and ensure that ALL children receive a quality education.
As long as a significant proportion of children are out of school system, these can only be pipe dreams and sub-par performance.

It has to be said. Punjab's issue with foreigners is that they became passive when their investment started showing return. Even more passive when the investment made big returns. Punjab has seen foreigners’ conduct with fellow or other nationals. Their conduct with Punjab is cold. Punjab’s recent interaction with fellow nationals wasn’t even of that nature but foreigners have likely realized that how it feels.
Punjab did make mistakes in past but that is further past. On the other hand, foreigners made some grave mistakes recently. Punjab came to know that most recently foreigners were interested in a Replacement competition and also who were the participants. After all the distress, if they remotely had that thought, it was shabby.
So, all this added to deduction that foreigners have started taken Punjab for granted. The solution was to reduce one sided activism by Punjab and see how things go. The relationship has to be based on respect and active bilateral exchange. It can't be all the time, never in the same place
