Protest continues against lack of facilities in Kohat hospital

KOHAT: Protests by civil society for provision of category-A facilities to the KDA Teaching Hospital entered the seventh day here on Monday.

The civil society has been staging protests inside the hospital under the aegis of Karwan-i-Amal, a welfare body, and demanding making functional the burns and trauma centres, filling of 70 vacant posts of doctors and construction of blocks in order to save the people from going to hospitals in Peshawar for seeking treatment.

The rights body chairman Saleem Altaf Advocate says that doctors in the KDA hospital referred the patients to Peshawar, even in cases of bone fracture or a single bullet injury.

He said that trauma and burns centres inaugurated by the then MNA of Awami National Party Khursheed Begum six years ago had been without machinery and neuron surgeon, due to which serious patients were referred to Taxila from southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

LAX SECURITY PERTURBS POLICE: The police on Monday issued warning notices to oil and gas facilities and other sensitive installations for insufficient security arrangements and asked them to improve the security as soon as possible under the security act.

In this regard, police teams visited the oil and gas wells in Shakardarra, banks, government and private educational institutions and other sensitive places and found them with incomplete security arrangements. They said these installations could fall easy prey to terrorists due to lack of security.

TEACHER’S KILLER ARRESTED: A police investigation has claimed that murder of a school principal on Friday was an honour killing and that they had arrested the accused, according to a press release issued the other day.

As per the investigation, the sister of the accused, Mohammad Arif of Behzadi Chakar Kot, had fled with the son of the victim, Qabil Hussain. The accused told the police that the deceased was a hurdle in the way of the return of his sister.

KOHAT: Though KDA teaching hospital is the main health facility of Kohat division that also caters to the patients of other southern districts, it has no burns facility and trauma centre. Similarly, a small facility like ultrasound was not available in the night shift at the emergency.

The hospital was inaugurated as category ‘A’ facility by then governor retired Lt-Gen Iftikhar Hussain Shah in 2000, but it was still short of 70 doctors. The hospital has received stretchers and beds for trauma centre and wards a couple of days ago which are without foams. As there has been no required extension in the hospital since long the stretchers have been placed in the galleries. MRI and CT scan facilities are also not available in the hospital and patients are referred to a nearby private hospital.

An official Rashid Bokhari told this correspondent on Sunday that the hospital was being placed in categories ‘B’ and ‘C’ since 2000 and now informally it was a category ‘A’ facility, but it would take time to get the required number of staff and machinery.

He said that a neurosurgeon had been transferred to Kohat from Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, more than a year ago, but due to lack of facilities not a single operation could be carried out. He said that trauma centre would be complete when all the neurosurgeon, orthopaedic surgeon and separate general surgeon were appointed and machinery made available.

Two years have passed to the visit of the special committee of provincial assembly to the women and children hospital, the city’s other major hospital, following complaints, but its reconstruction still remains a dream.

The redressal committee headed by MPA Shah Hussain and comprised of a representative of law department, health department and KP Assembly was constituted when the issue was raised in the assembly in 2016, MPA Najma Shaheen told this scribe. The committee acquainted itself of all the issues faced by the hospital, but no action was taken as yet.

The hospital is still without trained dispensers and well-equipped ambulance for shifting of serious patients to the KDA Teaching Hospital or to Peshawar.

The committee had recommended reconstruction of the hospital and taken up the issue with the provincial health department, but the reconstruction work could not been started.

KITCHEN GARDENING: The district government and agriculture department, Hangu, have started training of girls in kitchen gardening and preservation of food and vegetables.

An official statement said here on Sunday that the training sessions had started in Government Girls Degree Colleges and girls high school in Hangu and Thall tehsil.

It said that the training would continue in the next week. It said that during the training the girls would also learn how to save water while using kitchen water for gardening.

All the problems that have been compounding over the last 3 or so decades (the legacy of previous governance) will take time to solve and we will do well to be realistic about this. Any progress is better than no progress. Until "now" what has been happening in Pakistan is us going in reverse as a nation. I mean Pakistan is one of the worst rated nations in the world ranking of countries - how can anyone justify or praise what the previous governments did for us? It is absolutely ridiculous.

Saying that, if there has been no progress in these sectors at all, then I, as someone who believes PTI to a good party, do condemn it.

I just wish for once Pakistan can stand proud in the world as an equal, it doesn't matter which party helps to achieve this, but going by the track record, I have no faith in PMLN or PPP.

Charsadda residents collect donations for repairing ambulance

PESHAWAR - In an embarrassing move for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, the people of Charsadda started collecting donations for repairing out-of-order ambulance of District Headquarters Hospital and for installation of water cooler in the hospital premises.

The organisers, who have started the activity as a protest, said that the patients visiting the hospital had to suffer due to out of order ambulance and unavailability of drinking water in the health facility.

The residents set up a collection point at Farooq-e-Azam Chowk where they are seeking donations from people for repair of the ambulance at a cost Rs100,000. They said that the donations collected in the camp would be handed over to deputy commissioner. They said that the move would continue till improvement of the sorry state of affairs at the hospital.

Criticising the KP government, they said that it looked like repair of ambulance and provision of other facilities was a too big task for the health department. Therefore, we decided to collect donations for the purpose, they said. No official from the hospital administration was available for comment.

Meanwhile, doctors’ protest at the DHQ Hospital continued for 2nd day on Saturday. The Out Patient Department remained locked due to which the patients had to suffer a lot. The doctors initiated strike after protest by relatives of a child on Friday who died at the hospital due to alleged negligence of the doctors.

Faiz Khan, a local journalist, said that the ambulance was out of order for the last 6 months and there was no one to repair it. Later, the local jirga decided to repair the ambulance by collecting donations.

He said that some of the amount was collected when the district nazim intervened in the matter and later decided to repair the ambulance from the district funds.

However, the KP Health Department instantly responded on social media. There are always two sides of a story. Out of six ambulances, five are currently functioning and one requires repair, it said.
