Private shipyards to construct four 40000 ton LPD!!!

.
India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) reissued a request for proposal (RfP) in mid-September to three local private sector shipyards to build four amphibious assault ships for an estimated INR250 billion (USD4.16 billion.

The RfP to ABG, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering - all located on India's west coast - seeks a builder for 40,000-tonne landing platform docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy (IN). Completion is requested by 2027.

IN officials said all three contenders would be permitted to enter into joint ventures (JVs) with foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to design and build the LPDs.

Isn't 40000 ton is too huge for LPD. Every ship will cost $1.25 billion each!!!
They will become full fledged carrier!!!
:D
is not it too much ? Indian navy is not going to have big battle groups , why so many LPD, it would have been better to increase support battle group first. It should be after having 3-4 fully operational aircraft carriers battle group. even it will require addtional suppporting battle group for each LPD

.
WoW !! It looks more like an AC then an LPD,40K ton displacement must be an error, maybe?

Maybe this points to something else: more a Helo Carrier than a LPD......in terms of capabilities.
What would we do with a helo carrier or such a large LPD? We don't have a marine corps like the US does, and we don't have plans to place marine expeditionary forces in distant places. How are such assets going to be utilized? Surely we won't do any amphibious landing against Pak or China, given that we share long land borders with them?

I wonder if this is a misutilization of money. Shouldn't we be strengthening our submarine arm or even surface combatants first?

.
40000 Tons
Hmm
The only LPD that size is the USS America Class

Even if Indian Navy had stated 40000 Ton as Maximum size, that too would mean, they will have to narrow down between

Japanese Izumo Class
Spanish Juan Carlos Class
and American San Antonio class and America Class

My vote goes to USS America class
We are as it is going for S-70 SeaHawk Helis, might as well fly them off an American ship

a 30-40000 Ton LPD will also carry a fixed wing air group along with the assortment of helis

I see Indian Navy ordering 30-45 F35B to operate from these LPDs

.
I'm pretty sure these are NOT LPDs, but FLEET SUPPORT SHIPS (FSS).

Something like the DCNS BRAVE-class.

I agree with You
These funds would have been better off utilized buying 12 Minesweepers or 4 Scorpenes or even 90 NMRH

Its going to be amphibious assault carriers -with a helicopter squadron, plus attack helicopters and possible VTOL aircaft(if f-35).A 40,000 ton LP will be able to unload a armor brigade quickly.

Yes that makes much more sense.Gigantic amphibious landing platforms-little incredulous.

I dont think India will pay 1.25 Billion USD for a fleet support ship
when we paid 300 Million USD for 2 Shakti class Fleet Tankers which weigh 28000 Tons

If not, it will have be a modified version of the IAC-1, because for the life of me, I cannot fathom any other LPD that
displaces 40,000 tons. Unless you're talking of buying (& later building) a version of the America-class, but that is an LHD.

An FSS is much more than just a replenishment vessel.

Seeing you after some time buddy.

Where can we possibly land an armour brigade amphibiously? Karachi? Gwadar? Shanghai?
