His Imperial Highness Prince Yoshihito Katsura, the cousin of Japan's Emperor Akihito, died Sunday of a massive heart attack after being admitted to a Tokyo hospital a few hours earlier, the Imperial Palace announced. He was 66.

Katsura, sixth in line for the Japanese throne, was the second son of Prince Mikasa, who is 98 and Akihito's paternal uncle.

The deceased prince, who was single and had no children, had been in delicate health that had required hospital care on numerous occasions since 1988, when he suffered a series of strokes that left him in a wheelchair.

Despite his health problems, the prince had remained active in public life and regularly participated in diplomatic events and ceremonies along with serving as president of several non-profit organizations.

Katsura, who was born Feb. 11, 1948, graduated from Gakushuin University in 1971 and later continued and completed his university studies in Australia.
