On the first day of Indian PM Narendra Modi’s visit to France, President Emmanuel Macron called on India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir crisis in a bilateral framework.

More than a year after their last summit, Macron and Modi met again Thursday ahead of the weekend’s G7 summit in Biarritz, to which Modi had been invited although India is not a formal member of the grouping.

Defence and commercial contracts have dominated the agenda during meetings between French and Indian leaders in recent years. But this time, Modi and Macron met under the shadow of India’s controversial August 5 scrapping of a key constitutional article granting autonomy to the disputed Kashmir region.

The scrapping of Article 370 was implemented under an unprecedented lockdown on Kashmir. Thousands of Kashmiris – including prominent political leaders – have been detained, communication lines cut and mobility in the Kashmir Valley has been severely restricted with the deployment of tens of thousands of additional Indian troops in one of the world’s most militarised zones.

France will remain attentive

At the end of a meeting with Modi at the Château de Chantilly near Paris on Thursday, Macron noted that “France will remain attentive to ensuring that the interests and rights of the civilian population are duly taken into account in the territories on both sides of the Line of Control [between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region]."

Macron reiterated the French position that the Kashmir issue should be resolved on a bilateral basis. While Pakistan seeks multilateral negotiations to help resolve the crisis, India maintains it is a bilateral issue, which strengthens New Delhi’s position.

"I recalled that it was up to India and Pakistan to resolve their dispute bilaterally," Macron added. "It is the responsibility of both parties to avoid any degradation on the ground likely to lead to escalation."

Macron said that he would speak to Pakistan’s prime minister "in the coming days” and remind him of “France’s willingness to see this issue dealt with bilaterally".

Modi made no mention of the Kashmir crisis in his statement.

French are not neutral they want to milk india. They would go to great lengths licking indian balls. Americans and british even Germans keep these french in their place. We should do the same. French are very very biased people.
Clever folks are on their own!!! In the animal kingdom, foxes are from the most cleverest ones and fishes are from the dumbest!!! Foxes remain always hungry and may get killed while arranging a meal!!!! Fishes remain always well fed...

From what I recall, they were not supposed to be in UNSC, Churchill tried very hard persuading the Americans otherwise.

They are the whipping boys of Europe.

Whenever Germany gets angry, they get it.

No wonder they're always upset.

Germany should have been the P5 member instead ..

Germany was never going to get in after all the history. They just chose France to give the USA and its allies more power.

Europe is generally starting to become less relevant, but the USA will want to keep it 3-2 in its favour by keeping an additional European ally. Things may start to change dramatically if world power shifts further away from Europe and the USA.

USA has the military power as well as a reasonable economy, while Europe can no longer even afford any kind of capable military and is relying entirely on the USA.

The east and Russia are starting to gain in trade at both their expense.
