Both rifles entered service in 1963. While Dragunov retains the full power catridge 7.62 by 54, M16 went with the smaller 5.45 by 45. Dragunov is a bit heavier 8 pounds compared to 7 pounds, but overall not much difference in weight. In terms of numbers, about 10 million of both were built, making them the most common rifles on the modern battlefield.
