ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday nominated the party’s parliamentary leader Rana Tanveer for the post of chairman of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The decision was made by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif after holding consultations with party supremo Nawaz Sharif.

While Tanveer seems set to replace Shehbaz as PAC chairman, the party has nominated former foreign minister Khawaja Asif as its new parliamentary leader.

Shehbaz Sharif’s PAC chairmanship challenged in IHC

Shehbaz was elected as PAC chairman in December, after a four-month-long tussle between the treasury and opposition benches over the committee chairmanship.

Later, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) conceded to the opposition’s demand but on the condition that special panels probing the PML-N government’s expenditure would be headed by a member from the treasury bench.

Prime Minister Imran Khan did not want to see Shehbaz as PAC chairman, since the PAC is the most powerful body of the parliament that makes decisions on the audit reports finalised by the department of the Auditor General of Pakistan.

Rana Tanveer is a member of the National Assembly from NA-120, Sheikhupura-II. He has previously served as Minister for Defence Production and Minister for Science and Technology.

He also worked as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Finance from 1997 to 1999, as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The PML-N's joint parliamentary party on Thursday decided to nominate Rana Tanvir as the new head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a position previously held by party president Shahbaz Sharif.

According to a statement released by PML-N media cell, Shahbaz "was never keen to become PAC chairman and only accepted the position on the insistence of joint opposition and parliamentary advisory group".

The party, as per the procedure, will now have to write a letter to the National Assembly speaker regarding the change. The speaker's office will then issue a notification about the appointment of the new PAC chairman.

Talking to the media after the meeting, former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that "the PML-N has [already] taken PPP and the rest of the opposition parties in confidence over Tanvir's appointment."

The party also decided to appoint former defence minister Khawaja Asif as PML-N's parliamentary leader in the National Assembly. Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi made the announcement and said that Asif's appointment as the parliamentary leader was made in accordance with Shahbaz's wishes.

Party Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, however, rejected reports that Shahbaz Sharif has also relinquished the role of the leader of the opposition. Terming the reports as "baseless and mere rumours", Aurangzeb maintained that Shahbaz continues to hold the position, adding that "the joint opposition, under his leadership, will keep on playing its role in exposing the government's inability and inefficiency."

The PML-N's media cell elaborated that "Shahbaz made the decision [to relinquish the PAC and parliamentary leader's roles] after consultation with party supremo Nawaz Sharif."

Asif and Tanvir were nominated for the positions of parliamentary leader and PAC chairman respectively by Nawaz, the statement added. The parliamentary party accepted both the nominations.

After the meeting, Asif thanked Nawaz and Shahbaz for "trusting me", adding that he will fulfill his responsibility [to the best of his ability].

This nomination means absolutely nothing. PAC chairman has to be elected by it's members, as was Shahbaz.
So this time PTI should learn the lesson and make one of their own as PAC chairman and if the opposition want's it, they should demand the same thing in Sindh, give the PAC of Sindh assembly to PTI.
The rules should be same for all.

Lol pmln leaders escaping from Pakistan meanwhile Imran Khan keep crapping kisi ko NRO nahi miley ga so what is this? More than pmln, its embarrassment for the govt that corrupt leaders can flee the country so easily. Now its a matter of time, nawaz Sharif will leave Pakistan for good as well. Imran Khan should keep quiet if he don't have the power of NRO.

. .
what is a parliamentary leader?
same as the opposition leader?

. . .
oh, so it is not a Public Office then

That I am not sure. But may be it has certain privileges. Rana Tanveer was their Parliamentary Leader, whom they have made now PAC Chairman and in his place Khwaja Asif has been made Parliamentary Leader. Shehbaz Sharif is still Leader of Opposition.
