Six years after introducing diesel electric multiple unit or DEMU trains, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has rejected a proposal to buy any more of them, saying they are unfit for Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com.

The proposal was placed in a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council or ECNEC chaired by Hasina in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“DEMU trains are unfit to run. We must import some other trains,” Planning Secretary Md Nurul Amin quoted Hasina as saying in the meeting.

She made the remark when the proposed project to purchase DEMU trains for the launch of shuttle trains from Bangabandhu Hi-Tech Park in Gazipur to Dhaka was placed in the meeting.

“As the previously purchased DEMU trains did not come in handy for the passengers, and many of these have broken down, these won’t be purchased anymore,” Hasina added, according to the secretary.

The prime minister also ordered reformation of the project and import of some other trains.

She also asked that the Dhaka-Kaliakoir office-hour train be run without stoppage.

Hasina inaugurated DEMU train services on Dhaka-Narayanganj route in a ceremony on Apr 24, 2013 at Kamalapur Railway Station.

Bangladesh imported 20 DEMU trains from China at abut Tk 4.27 billion for the project worth total Tk 6.55 billion.

Half of the DEMU trains imported that time are out of operation now, Bangladesh Railway Additional Director General Mihir Kanti Guha told bdnews24.com.

The situation has forced a halt to DEMU train services on Dhaka-Cumilla, Akhaura-Sylhet, Lalmonirhat-Parbotipur, Laksam-Chattogram and Laksam-Chandpur routes, he said.

The remaining 10 sets of DEMU trains operate on Dhaka-Gazipur, Dhaka-Narayanganj and Dinajpur-Panchagar routes, according to the official.

Four more sets are awaiting repairs, after which services will resume on some more routes, Mihir said.

Scary, Chinese tech that bad or is it poor maintenance by the Bangladeshis?

. . . .
Either way, Bangladeshis won't be buying them anymore. Ask Pakistan railways why they aren't buying Chinese engine sets anymore.
Then why other like Brazil or Nepal or Peru are still buying? Why China own never encounter so much problem like Bangladesh? Care to explain? Maintenance need money, if you don't have the finance to handle it. Don't blame others.

Who am i to blame others? It's the relevant countries speaking through actions about Chinese locomotive standards.

.
That's how China maintains its trains, the largest fleet in the world, you can't just make the train run without proper maintanence, Chinese trains run through the harshest places on this planet without any problems.

We are generalizing here a lot. And some Chinese posters are outright being untruthful. Harshest places? Really??

China is the home of many companies who make this type of train locomotive equipment. No one can claim that every Chinese company makes great products. Being in the US market, the lack of Chinese product reputation is more common. There is a phrase called 'Cheap Chinese' Americans sometimes generalize on. Which is also wrong. But there are reasons why that phrase came about, Chinese quality is highly variable (some say unreliable).

But - Bangladeshi mechanics have maintained Canadian locomotives which are now 65~66 years old (see image below). Some Montreal EMD Locomotives supplied in the late 50s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh_Railway_Class_2000)are still running pulling long container consists. Why can't Bangladesh Railway maintain Chinese DEMU's? Unless Chinese build quality is crap to start with for those DEMU's supplied. Some Chinese suppliers don't care about quality reputation.

I am familiar with rolling stock in Bangladesh. Chinese rolling stock and motive power (locomotives) are not reputed to be the best quality-wise, this is honest observation. I am sorry but this is local impression.

Locomotive Quality from good to worse is like this,

German (Henschel) --> American/Canadian (EMD) --> Japanese (Mitsubishi, Hitachi) --> Korean (Hyundai) --> Indian (DLW/MLW) --> Chinese (DEMU units supplied in 2013 are the absolute worst)

When the PM of a country rejects products - she hardly lies. But, maybe another Chinese supplier may have a better product. The supplier needs to look at local needs and design a better product to increase their reputation.

DEMU is not like normal diesel Locomotive Engine (I am sure) ……… So their work is also different … In Pakistan Case Engines where ok but bigger in fuking seize(if I remember right) and our Railway maintenance sucks … Even latest USA made engines are standing in Railway workshop (I saw news report on TV about it , cannot find it )…

Yes all Railways in subcontinent suffer from loco maintenance issues (India is bit better because they make their own).

DEMU means diesel-electric multiple unit where lead passenger car houses the engine (see first image of the thread). This is a medium sized engine but needs to be reliable. I know reliable medium sized diesel engines include DEUTZ, Caterpillar, EMD, GE, Volvo, Kubota, Yanmar and such used for railways, generator and marine (passenger ferry/launch) use.

Chinese engines do not have a highly reliable reputation in this area, yet.

Scary, Chinese tech that bad or is it poor maintenance by the Bangladeshis?

How will lungiwala Bangali hold a candle to Chinese? Blame do saaley Bangali-ko. So typical....:D

This is a meter gauge DEMU? Who makes the engine?

I dont know whether it is a meter gauge DEMU or not.

I have tried to search and I dont find any news about the engine, but PT Inka has cooperation with European and American engine manufacturer.

This is a failure for BD... what feasibility study was undertaken to judge the appropriateness of these trains. What are the reasons for failure? Have we undertaken a lesson learned exercise so this does not happen in the future.
