PM Narendra Modi to launch India's biggest labour overhaul in decades

About time, we are already lacking private investment ,labour reforms are needed and should be radical to attract global investment.

.
Manish Sabharwal, one of the brains behind Rajasthan's labour reforms and co-founder of
recruitment firm Teamlease, said the Centre would have been better off without attempting
these changes.
"Let states carry out these changes and save your political energy for other policy reforms,"
he said.

This makes more sense. Let there be more competition among states to attract investment.

. .
@AugenBlick , @Echo_419 , by bringing this law BJP will again lose perception battle that is already lost for Land Acq Bill.
Nope. While they may be losing perception battle in Media and maybe Delhi.....the rest of the country does not agree.... e.g. MP and RJ have something similar already in effect. Don't fall for presstitute propaganda.

Central labour reforms will create more problems than it will solve. The best way to go about with this is to give states the freedom to pass independent laws relating to labour. This will enable development oriented states to perform better than crony socialist states. Federalism needs to be the way forward for India.

.
At least get GST and LAB cleared then look to reforming labour laws, otherwise Modi is simply stacking up the number of his opponents and thus making little progress on any of these key bills all whilst not having a majority in the RS.

The GoI has sent out signals that it is looking to create the conditions for "competitive federalism" so what you are proposing is not too fat from reality.

Problem with that is that the sensible states will do precisely that, but the not so sensible states will continue to play caste and religion and these are the states with huge youth bulges. This could lead to mass migration, social problems, eventually the bad states will have to change but this could tak a generation or so, too much time, this would be a luxury.

I am against these labour unions. Whenever I used to travel in train, always used to see some strike notice call from SRMU. Always there will be some strike call by this union in the railway stations.

Even wondered whether their job is only to strike always. With their posters and banners they created a complete mess in every railway station walls.

When VSNL was acquired by the Tatas, govt labour union created some problem. Finally tata ended up in giving more salary to even the office peyuns, than a techie who joined after the takeover of tata. Even today go and checkout in TCL chennai, u will see guys who are just giving plate during lunch time earns more than 50k due to these unions...

Due to these unions tata ended up in paying a huge junk to useless people. Who will dare to invest or acquire a company under these circumstances?

Do you know how he plans to make it tough to form Unions?

Please, allow me to tell you.

It mandates that atleast 30% of the Employees of the firm must agree to join before it is officially accepted as a Union. That means it will limit the number of unions in a factory - because right now, Union politics is causing a lot of trouble. Any 6 people together can form a union - so there are many places with hundreds of unions in one factory!! The unions compete with each other for members by promising outrageous things and then demand them from the factory and strike when not given that.

It doesn't stop you from forming Unions, it prevents facetious and competitive Unionization which does nothing for genuine worker rights and instead does everything to prevent factories from running smoothly and smothers employement.

This kind of thing if left to continue will ensure we are never able to ramp up our manufacturing to global levels.

Please don't oppose good GoI initiatives for the sake of it even if you do oppose the BJP.

My @$$ he's going to 'make it tough'. BMS being the biggest union in the country will get a majority share once you start having these limitations. This is not intended to break unionism but only concentrate all union power into the hands of the BMS and remove all others. Once that happens every factory will be held hostage to BJP. The rest of what you say is fanboy stuff. If BMS was a smaller entity he would have brought in different laws to increase BMS share.

You know labor unions in private companies outside commie states are not that bad. You can manage them. And @Skull and Bones @Echo_419 @tsinga while there are arguments to prevent excessive unionism, anyone that thinks they need to be removed completely is off their heads. Corporates if left to themselves are completely extrionary. In Maruti, long before the strike action was started by the unions, maruti was 'enforcing' the workers with beatings. Are you saying that these need to be ignored? That no one should protect them?

What happened to that policy of exporting farmers to Africa from India and Bangladesh ?
Karuturi Global had taken some initiatives.

@jamahir may be interested ?

Then limit migration. Progressive states should not be punished with migration. Let them rot with their corrupt useless leaders.

ANother Land bill in making. Why not let states decide among themselves. States with improved labour laws will get industries. Others can keep legacy laws.

Its signal of intent when done by GoI. In the details, states get to do what they want. Same with LAB.

Opposition whining is not an adequate reason to undertake much needed reforms.

I want Unions to remain in factories, but I want limitations.

Guynextdoor, please think things through - 30% membership means that there will always be 3 unions in every factory - generally that means that the small time unions (the violent kind) and the kind that starts most 'bandhs' will get wiped out.
The only 3 unions that will remain will be the major ones aligned to Congress, BJP and the Left which are relatively more responsible.

Guynextdoor, here comes the difference between your thought process and mine.

I don't believe that every decision that GoI takes is for self benefit. Because any decision whatsoever regardless of how small it is will have some angle in which you can say BJP/a/b/c party will benefit. I will give them the benefit of doubt till proven that they acted with malafide intent.

I want limits on Unionization and no competitive unionization politics.

I am firmly in favour of these changes. I can only say I hope you would leave political views aside and look at cases on their own merit.

Opposition whining is not an adequate reason to undertake much needed reforms.
I agree, but I disagree that GoI needs to do this particular reform itself. GoI should focus on reforms that cannot be left to the states - like GST & DTC.

GoI should come out with a model draft and leave it entirely to the States to do it and abrogate the central labour laws.
Let each state decide on its own what it wants.
You can bet that within 10 years each state would have changed it to nearly the same as the model draft.
