Last year in November, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's estranged wife Jashodaben Modi wanted to go and meet her relatives abroad, she was denied a passport because her application was apparently 'incomplete.'

The regional passport office in Gujarat did not accept her application saying it was "incomplete" because there was no marriage certificate or a joint affidavit with the spouse.

According to the passport office, a marriage certificate or a joint affidavit is a required document to get the passport.

Jashodaben now wants to know how did the Prime Minister get a passport without showing the marriage certificate.

The 64-year-old filed an RTI application on Wednesday seeking details and a copy of the PM's passports. She filed her application at the Regional Passport Office (RPO), Ahmedabad.

A relative of Jashodaben who accompanied her to the RPO on Wednesday told TOI that the PM's wife had asked for details and a copy each of the maiden passport, renewed passports and the passport issued to Modi after he became Gujarat chief minister.

"Her RTI application has also sought all related applications and documents that were submitted," Jashodaben's relative said.

Regional passport officer Z A Khan said they were scrutinizing her application. "We will give a reply within the stipulated time frame of 30 days," Khan said.

This is not Jashodaben's first RTI. Just after Modi became PM, Jashodaben had filed an RTI application seeking details of the security she was entitled to as wife of the prime minister. In November last year, Mehsana superintendent of police had declined to give the information saying the matter pertained to security and could not be disclosed under RTI.

Modi has a passport because

1. He mentioned himself as single.

You're asked for a marriage certificate only when you mention yourself as married on the application form.

Besides it was a child marriage and he was embarrassed about it.

has he legally divorced jashodaben??

. .
Well legally he can't be considered married as Child marriage is illegal.

1. it was a arranged marriage and at the time of the wedding he was 18 and she was 16, so neither of them can really be called children.

2. even so, the so-called "child marriage restraint act" from british era was already in place when they wed, so technically the act of wedding itself was illegal.

3. socially, she was his wife and a neglected wife at that, because he didn't legally divorce her, hence his action was illegal... the neglect[1] :
After Jashodaben arrived at the house of Modi's family, Modi had an argument with his parents and left their home to meet his uncle as planned. Over the three-year period around the marriage, Jashodaben estimates that she spent about three months with her husband. After Modi left, he continued with his professional life.

Jashodaben studied further to become a teacher at primary school, and from 1978-1990 taught in Banaskantha district.[8] In 1991 she moved to Rajosana village and remains there. She is retired and her pension is ₹14000 (US$210) per month. One commentator said that her low salary would have made much of life a hardship for her. In talking about her relationship with Modi, in one interview Jashodaben said "We have never been in touch... There has been no communication from his end to this day." In a later interview Jashodaben said that until 1987 she and Modi spoke "normally".
Jashodaben wears a mangala sutra necklace and sindoor in her hair, which are traditional signs that a woman is married. The elements of the marriage and long estrangement between Jashodaben and Modi has started discussions and awareness about the relationships between men and women in India, as Jashodaben is not the first wife in a traditional marriage to have been abandoned by a politician husband.
Jashodaben receives a lot of fan mail. One person said that "Crores of girls in India take inspiration from her". Religious organizations have praised her with comparison to Suvarchala, the wife of Hanuman in Brahmacharya, who did not oppose him when he sought to renounce his marriage.

A writer for Dawn News said that the marriage of Jashodaben and Modi was "a legal and public issue, not a private one between spouses." He compared the issue of wife's rights in this case to those in the Shah Bano legal case.

1. According to his own admission, he didn't know properly about marriage when he get married. I don't think 18 year old boy is so misinformed.
2. Child marriage still happening in India in some extent in BIMARU States falsifying age of couples.
3. I current law, if someone not met his in 5 years then Divorce would be considered.
