PM Imran Khan ‘puzzled at the cacophony' over Pakistan's exclusion from US climate conference

Incredible so many intelligent Pakistanis propagate the conspiracy against Pakistan theory on this thread. In reality, Pakistan's carbon emission is too low for her to be included.

yeah the nations list sort of seems to break down into four groups.
big polluters/energy consumers
big energy producers
nations well on their way to renewable energy
some islands + Bangladesh that will disappear.

looks more like a lecture on responsiblity for the consumers and producers then a road map presented by the renewable nations.

Are you illiterate or deliberately citing an incorrect quote?

Do you know what the difference is between being confused at something, and being confused at *a cacophony* over something?

“I am puzzled at the cacophony over Pak not being invited to a climate change conference!”
Khan doesn't care. You wish he cared.

Relax. Khan feels the same. The illiterate OP didn't read Khan's actual tweet.

Illiterate OP is right. More like a bhakt OP too giddy to realize that Pakistan's exclusion is like a "Chhota sa Eid" for them but unimportant for anyone in Pakistan.....

Like others said, Pakistan is not going underwater anytime soon. Which is not true for some Indian coastal cities like Chennai and Kolkata, for example.

The collective ignorance in the subcontinent about global warming is staggering.

Biden’s snub on climate
We learn that while India, Bangladesh and the UAE all made the list for Kerry's stopovers, Pakistan did not

Editorial April 03, 2021

The Foreign Office has been scrambling to try and paint US climate envoy John Kerry's Asian tour as anything but a snub for Pakistan. Just a few days back, after Pakistan was also shut out from US President Joe Biden's upcoming climate summit, the Foreign Office claimed that it was because Pakistan — despite being one of the most climate change-sensitive countries in the world — was not among the world's largest polluters, or the most sensitive country in the region. If we were to accept this, it would make sense for the foreign ministry to arrange talks with Kerry when he was scheduling meetings with leaders in this part of the world. Instead, we learn that while India, Bangladesh and the UAE all made the list for Kerry's stopovers, Pakistan did not.
Incidentally, all three of those countries are also on the invite list for the virtual climate summit.
Still not a snub? The fact of the matter is that the invite list for the summit also includes all of the world's 10 most populous countries, except Pakistan. It includes several countries that are not major polluters or highly sensitive to climate change. The only change appears to be a shift in Washington's policy towards Islamabad, as former US ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter said at the recent Islamabad Security Dialogue.
Some analysts have pinned Pakistan's dual omission as an "unfortunate oversight" caused by US policymakers' view of Pakistan through the narrow lens of security issues. This is unlikely for multiple reasons. For a start, 'mistakenly' forgetting to invite one of the world's most populous and most climate change-sensitive countries reeks of incompetence. We know that competence has been one of the hallmarks of the Biden administration so far. Meanwhile, Kerry, a former secretary of state, is well versed on Pakistan's issues, and the Biden White House also includes several people who are highly familiar with Pakistan and its issues. This strengthens the argument that they knowingly sidelined Pakistan.
We cannot say whether it is to punish Islamabad for its close ties with China; to push Pakistan to use its influence on the Afghan Taliban as the US seeks to delay its withdrawal from Afghanistan; or for some other reason. But we do know that there must be a reason.

Showing signs of weakness and dependency towards West in general and US in particular. Why should we give a f*** whatever they do. Aren't we complete on our own??

I disagree, If people look to single you out like that, and not treat you equally, then there is no downside to calling that out, and asking them to explain themselves ....

The current Biden administrations approach to Pakistan is shameful, so let it be known to the people of Pakistan. There is no need for any Pakistani adminstration to "explain away" the poor behaviour of the Biden administration .... and they should stop.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said he was “puzzled at the cacophony” over Pakistan's exclusion from US President Joe Biden’s climate change conference.
“I am puzzled at the cacophony over Pak not being invited to a climate change conference!” tweeted PM Khan.

The premier said he was puzzled as his government’s “environment policies are driven solely” by its commitment to the future generations of a clean and green Pakistan to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The PM said that due to this approach, his government has taken initiatives such as Green Pakistan, 10 billion-tree tsunami, nature-based solutions and cleaning up of Pakistan’s rivers.

“We have gained vast experience in 7 years, beg with KP, and our policies are being recognised and lauded. We are ready to help any state wanting to learn from our experience,” said PM Khan.

The PM said that if the international community is “serious about countering impact of climate change” they can look at the priorities he has laid out for the UN Climate Change Conference 2021 — COP26.

Biden invites 40 world leaders in climate change conference, excludes Imran Khan

Last month, US President Joe Biden invited 40 world leaders to the Leaders Summit on Climate he will host on April 22 and 23.

However, Pakistan was the most notable omission from the list of invitees. The virtual Leaders Summit will be live streamed for public viewing.

The Leaders Summit on Climate will underscore the urgency – and the economic benefits – of stronger climate action, international media reported. It will be a key milestone on the road to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) this November in Glasgow.

The summit will reconvene the US-led Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, which brings together 17 countries responsible for approximately 80 percent of global emissions and global GDP.

The president also invited the heads of other countries that are demonstrating strong climate leadership, are especially vulnerable to climate impacts, or are charting innovative pathways to a net-zero economy. A small number of business and civil society leaders will also participate in the Summit.

Leaders from India, Bangladesh, Antigua and Barbuda, Bhutan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria and Vietnam have been invited to participate in the summit, but not from Pakistan.

To the snub, Pakistan came out with a strong response asking for ‘inclusive cooperation’ to criticism that it had not been invited by Joe Biden to the Leaders Summit on Climate Change.

Defending its position on the importance that Pakistan gives to climate change, the Foreign Office pointed out that there was no doubt about the commitment to addressing climate change and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s leadership on this account is well accepted and appreciated around the world.

“Climate Change is one of the defining challenges of our times that can only be countered through inclusive, cooperative and forward-looking policies. Pakistan remains fully committed to play its due role in this fight,” said the FO.

It pointed out that The Leaders Summit on Climate Change hosted by President Biden reconvenes the US-led Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, which brings together leaders from countries responsible for approximately 80 percent of global emissions and GDP.

“The summit also includes representation from countries holding chairs of geographic regions and groups including least developed countries, small island developing states, and Climate Vulnerable Forum. Pakistan, despite being among the top 10 countries affected by Climate Change, is one of the lowest emitters - with less than 1 percent of the global emissions,” the Foreign Office added.

It also sent out a reminder that Pakistan is continuing to meaningfully contribute to shape the global climate change discourse, inter alia, as the vice president of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“The government’s landmark initiatives like the Billion Tree Tsunami have won international acclaim, including from the World Economic Forum. Pakistan also co-chaired the multibillion-dollar Green Climate Fund, established to support climate actions in developing countries, last year,” added the Foreign Office.

seems like invitations are to those who are the most effected or are the biggest reason for pollution, anyways not inviting Pakistan is their loss as Pakistan is doing big and playing very positive role in going green which world can learn from.

The third world needs to stop seeking validation from Europe and America.

They do not have your interests at heart. Rather they will do anything to take advantage over you and keep you subjugated.

Just get a grip and get on with it.

You seem to be doing a great job with tree plantation drive....just continue without seeking approval from others.

This is called "slave mentality".

IK isnt seeking validation, his tweet is literally laughing at the move and he points out Pakistan's record in tackling climate change.

The point he is trying to make is that if the US was actually serious about developing an international aproach to the environment, then they would have invited Pakistan; who despite having very low emisions compared to other countries, is still a major nation in the continent.

That is exactly what Pakistan said, Pakistan will keep on doing what it is doing for the betterment of it's future generation. This action by them has nothing to do with climate change but trying to exert it's influence in order to humiliate. They want something from Pakistan and toe their line, Pakistan called out this cacophony for what it actually is, sometimes one has to be vocal in protest.

In simple words consider this a sort of message and Pakistan replied to it.

Democrats are used to a yes man Pakistan. Especially how John Kerry used to interfere and dictate Pakistan, their tone regarding Pakistan? We have short memory and forget how it used to be. The 'Do More or else' bullying.
