PM IK: Karkey dispute resolved with help of President Erdogan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has resolved the Karkey dispute with the help of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Monday.

In a tweet, PM Imran said the matter was resolved "amicably" and that Pakistan had successfully saved $1.2 billion — the sum the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) had imposed as a penaltiy on Islamabad.

"PTI Govt, with the help of President Erdogan, has amicably resolved the Karkey dispute and saved Pak USD 1.2 billion penalty imposed by ICSID," the premier wrote.

The ICSID had slapped a penalty worth $760 million plus interest to the Turkish ship-based energy firm, Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretim, following the latter's move to register arbitration claims against Pakistan under a bilateral investment treaty (BIT).

Yes Sir ......Govt should review the pricing ...now LNG price is 4.8 dollar mmbtu , Nawaz sign 8.4 mmbtu/15 years .... if Bangladesh can do it ...why not Pakistan ... its matter of billions of dollars. But our babu get kickbacks and write dirty contracts for few dollars in there pockets...

oh don't you worry. they will strike a deal for that too and you will see comments praising Imran Khan.

Nawaz was clever that he only dealt with companies who had direct links to either PM of that country or Royal family of that country.

Now this NRO will be hailed as major success and not to mention the Malaysian stash of Xardari

We have very strong case against this company.... Pak govt could get money through counter sue, they took Pak govt to international commercial court to recover that money. When ISI and FIA provide the report, that company went to back foot and involve there president to avoid counter sue.

Pakistani ministers, bureaucrats and even PM at the time are signatory to the agreement with Karkay..... so on what grounds will Pak sue the company?

That is the reason as why corrupt lot was crying sky high for inclusion of ISI, MI etc into high power committee for investigations as such.

Do you think govt will take action against those bureaucrats, company and PPP officials ? ...... no ... all got clean chit . Because Pakistan saved from massive fraudulent sue .. Imagine same case in West. There govt and court tear them apart. Plus, as long as the sue was benefiting the company, Turkish govt was silent. When all of sudden table turnaround , there govt jump in to save the foreign exchange and reputation of company ... this " maslihat pasandi" has killed us....

That is the problem, real culprit was company who wrongfully sued Pakistan and win the case. And pushing govt of Pakistan for the payment of 1.2 billion dollars.

Allow me to disagree on few points. Speaking of culprits within bureaucracy involved in this case; you haven't seen how many agreed to become approver & many are pinned hence, the development/information being fetched. Secondly, Turkish government wasn't deliberately silent rather, Pakistan take the case when we found the illegalities in contracts. Don't you think that why Karkay will tell anyone about the bribes and all by themselves? but, IK put this up with Erdogan & President personally took interest as well as helped to resolve matter in short time so that our economy can be benefited. If karkey was, supposedly being blacklisted; had needed a lot of our energy as well as cost to fight the case before International Forum and then you can imagine the long lasting case. Here, it seems like we took initiative to boost our economy and our interests. However, I am not aware of all the T&Cs in this deal yet and only time will tell.
