SIALKOT: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, while addressing the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sialkot on Saturday, announced plans for building a Sialkot-Lahore expressway.

"Progress has always been made in democratic times. In dictatorships, the country was pushed backward," the premier said, in reference to former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

The premier also held a question and answer session with traders and businessmen present at the conference and addressed their concerns. He added that the whole country will benefit from investments in Sialkot.

PM Nawaz said he aims to eliminate power shortages in Pakistan. He added that in 1999, electricity was available in abundance.

"We are purchasing 4,000 megawatts of electricity from China, and creating 7,000 megawatts from ongoing projects," the premier said. He also said that planning for a reduction in electricity price is also under way.

While talking about the operation in Karachi, the premier explained that the operation is not against any organisations.

"The Karachi operation is against criminals only," PM Nawaz explained.

He further said that the government will only rest after gun-culture is eliminated from the country, adding that it is the government's responsibility to make Karachi and the rest of the country peaceful.

PM Nawaz shed a light on the improvement in Karachi's law and order situation, saying that incidents of heinous crimes like target killings and kidnappings have been curbed significantly. He added that reviving peace in Karachi will lead to a promotion of business activities in Pakistan.

PM Nawaz was received at the Sialkot airport by members of the national and provincial assemblies, said a report published on Radio Pakistan. He was accompanied by Minister of Defence, Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif.

The premier is also scheduled to meet businessmen and elected representatives during his visit.

Why just between Sialkot-Lahore? GT road is inin poor condition, we need motorway in our area in place of GT road.

Why not just expand and improve on the G.T road
The LHR-GUJ patch is possibly the worst road i have driven on
That was about 2 yrs ago
People tell me that situation hasn't changed

Lahore to Gujrat stretch of GT road is probably the most densely populated area, without any indication of lanes or traffic lights. If U are unlucky enugh to reach upon Gondlawala chowk at around 7 o clock then by the time U get out of Gujranwala its 9 o clock, same could be said of Shahdara especially in Morning & evening hours. Why not widen & improve that stretch.

govt needs to increase toll on roads, shift tolls to automatic and use revenue earned directly on roads

Motorway already has much area covered but distance through motorway is much more than GT road.

depends on how you define a common Pakistani and the difference of view between you and PM about who the common Pakistani it.

Any updates for Sialkot-Lahore Motorway ???....cutting 3 hr time to only 45 mins

govt needs to increase toll on roads, shift tolls to automatic and use revenue earned directly on roads

The only problem would be that Pakistan's 60% of the population won't be able to afford it. The other 40%, from the wealth numbers I've seen, can pay tolls 4 times a day and not break a sweat (undocumented wealth of-course). So you'd need both, toll roads for the rich, and regular roads for the normal people. Its like that in the US too. You can drive in the EZ pass lane, or a toll way all the way in major cities, or you don't pay toll but have to deal with regular highways and be stuck in traffic like everyone else. There is a price for anything premium :enjoy:.

But this expressway, IMO, should be tolled or majority of it should be. Why? Because if I understood correctly, Sialkot has been producing billions of dollars in exports every year for the past like 50-60 years. So people there, who'd need a specific expressway, compared to the normal route, would be businessmen. Btw, I googled the route just now and its not too much time, there seem to be by passes available that don't require stops inside cities. So this request may be from the rich and busy businessmen who don't even want to waste the 30-60 extra minutes.

But nevertheless, a good idea. More roads bring more real estate around them, more hospitals, new communities, jobs, etc, etc. So infrastructure building is always the first path towards growth for any country.

Not much commission there. The money that mysteriously lands in foreign accounts that builds their offshore properties. Thats why.
