GUWAHATI: The Assam government has asked the Army to conduct an inquiry into allegations of rape of a Karbi woman and molestation two girls from the same tribe by jawans in the hill district of Karbi Anglong on April 6.
On Friday, hundreds of protesters clashed with the police when they tried to storm an Army camp at Dokmoka in Assam's Karbi Anglong district. When police tried to stop them, they pelted stones and at least nine policemen were injured. Several other agitators too were hurt. The home secretary said there was only lathicharge and no police firing.
Assam home secretary LS Changsan said, "We've registered a case of alleged rape and another case of molestation of Karbi tribal women by Army personnel on April 6. We've taken up the matter with the Army at the highest level and they have started an internal enquiry to establish the crime. Since the state is under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, we have to take sanctions from the Centre before prosecuting the guilty."
Defence PRO Lt Col S Newton said, "We acknowledge that FIRs have been lodged and cases have been registered. Police are conducting an inquiry and the Army is cooperating with it. The Army is also conducting an inquiry of its own and if the allegations against our personnel are true, appropriate action will be taken against the guilty as per law.
"We do not want to get the rape allegation case to be mixed up with protests. There may be several factors involved with protests but the rape allegation is a completely different case," the home secretary said.
Several social and political organizations on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Union home minister Rajnath Singh through the deputy commissioner, demanding immediate arrest of the Army personnel allegedly involved in the incident within 24 hours and also withdrawal of the Army from the area.
The organizations have called a 24-hour Karbi Anglong bandh on Saturday to protest against the incident.
