Hi,

Absolutely---I am sorry that I missed that---.

Around 13 years ago---I was working in Sunnymead CA---silison valley---. I had a black customer buying a highline car---. Asked about his job and income for credit---worked for a large anti virus ( compute ) cmpany a manager making around $250K---I told him that I was surprised that so few black guys in this field---while talking he mentioned about the shock of his life in Japan---went to the Lunch room of the company---where pretty much all the IT guys were from India talking fluent japanese---. They had schools teaching them different languages of choice.

Just to clear it up for others---the discussion I believe started with with translating all books into urdu and the research work etc etc etc---.

Now who are favoring this---pakistani supreme court judges whose kids are being taught in USA / UK---and this member here from Canada ---new media broadcasters and anchors all hypocrites---.

Well for start Pakistani court decision to implement urdu in offices was written in english. Now, throwing 5-6 foreign languages to a kid who may not even speak them in his life again is not a good decision. How many lf us who learn Spanish here are going tl visit Spain, US or brazil one day? Maybe 1 out of every 1000. And we are not that much wealthy nation who can appoint 4-5 language teachers in every high school just so that students can chose and learn language of their choice.

Good approach is to have language centres/academies in every district which teachers languages. Or languages departments in every arts unviersity (every district have uni's having arts departments) which teaches languages. On english i think its good till grade 10. A kid learn enough english by then, and urdu. So there should 't be any language subject onward grade 10 to reduce the college bag weight (yes. In Pakistan we still have have bags on majority college stduents). For grade 1 to 10 i suggest removing Pakistan study and islamiat as an extra subjects and instead put 5 lesson's of islamiyat in english, 5 in urdu. Similarly 5 lessons of Pakistan study in english and 5 in urdu. This way we not only learn english and urdu but we also learn Islamiyat and Pak study without having any separate book for them.

I think 10 years is NOT enough for school leaving certificate. In Germany and most of the world, the school leaving certificate called "Abitur" in Germany requires 12 or 13 years of education at the secondary level school. It makes you eligible for admission directly in a University. They used to have a university degree called "Diplom" in any subject after the Abitur that used to take 4 to 6 years of education in the University in their respective subject. And after that If someone wanted to do a doctorate then that would also take up to 3 to 5 years. There was no concept of Bachelor or Master in Germany until a decade ago, but now they have replaced classical university Diplom degree with 4 years Bachelor followed by a 2 years Master if someone opts for a Master. Now they have the opportunity to stop at the Bachelor, earlier you had to do Diplom which was equivalent to the Masters.

This whole concept of "college" between High secondary School and the University is the most stupid and unnecessary "institution" in Pakistan. Intermediate studies (FA/FSc) College should be merged with the secondary school and the bachelor studies (BA/BSc) should be shifted to the Universities like the rest of the civilized world.

Hi,

A language of choice---.

In around 2010 I am looking at jobs sections in the news paper---nanny job pops up in one section---a rich chinese couple looking for a french or a spanish speaking live in nanny full time in San Francisco---who will speak to the child only in her native language---. The mom and dad will teach the baby chinese and english and the nanny will teach a third language---.

The world belongs to the rich---there is a reason for that---.

Maybe because Spanish is the most studied foreign language in US and some 50 million US citizens native language? Its like A Pakistani citizen from Punjabi background learn Pashto in his High school in Bahawalpur. That makes sense, its the second most spoken language of his country. Tell me to learn spanish here in Pakistan when school kids in San francisco start learning Saraiki in their schools.

Apart from that, majority people want to learn French because some idiot once said its the langauge of love. I, on the other hand get every feeling from french but love. Its a trend in US, every teen try to learn a european language and visit europe after high school. OTOH Majority of us dont even travel to all big cities of Pakistan in our lifetime. I am 27 and yet haven't been to Karachi, Quetta, Haidarabad etc. Let me create a thread and ask our Pakistanis how many of us visited top 10 big cities of Pakistan. Results will make you wonder.

That would be very interesting thread, I didn't visit any new city other than Lahore before I was 19 years old.

dont take me wrong but I wish pak army stop using English. they need to communicate in Urdu. I believe there might be many many soldiers who can not progress due to language barrier even they might be highly talented. same applies to IT/engineering fields. they need to translate everything in Urdu just like Chinese, Russian, German, Italian, French did. trust me this will be a game change for country.
sorry if I ruined your thread. just trying to bring up positive point.:-)
This cannot happen. The military needs to communicate in English for many reasons including the very fact that we as a nation have not invested enough to be able to translate highly technical materials in the vernacular.
Unless we have an approach like that in Turkey, where every document, manual, table, specification is translated in the national language, we won't be successful.

The situation in Pakistan is unfortunately a bastardized one where our English standards have consistently gone down with British English being slowly replaced with an Americanized version/slang which is neither here or there. The Urdu medium schools have done a disservice as they are unable to keep up with the evolution of content as such those attending these schools are already at a disadvantage. Guess where the bulk of the manpower in the military is coming from now?

I am not suggesting that we ape the angraiz as the first few generations of our officers and elite did (Gora-sahib mentality) but to be good in the profession of arms, we have to invest in learning and learning languages that benefit us because the vast majority of technical infusion is from the West to us and as such, at this time, English is the primary medium of instruction the world over. If Pakistan takes on the effort to translate and keep up with the technical education, then Urdu can be used effectively. Until then, we have no choice but to run language labs in all of our military academies to get the standards of English up.

One additional thing that will help Pakistan is to also accommodate for higher educational standards within our ranks. We should look for Intermediate pass/graduates to join the JCO/NCO ranks. This will mean forcing the standards of recruitment to be lifted for officers (educationally speaking). This is the need of the time as the technology infusion across all services and arms in increasing and requires individuals who understand things in-depth. Fortunately, the Air Force has been ahead of all three services in this regard. Army and Navy need to catch up.

. .
most of these young boys come from poor and lower middle family background and army polishes them by investing money and time, this provides very good opportunity for children of such modest families to rise in their life
