Pashto and Hindko in Peshawar, Charsadda

I am curious about what % of the populations of Peshawar and Charsadda speak Pashto fluently, and what % speak Hindko fluently.

I am interested in the mother tongue - for example someone should claim to speak Pashto or Hindko only if their grandmothers speak (or used to speak) it on a daily basis in the family kitchen.

Charsadda :woot::woot::blink:

Why Charsadda ? where you saw this word Charsadda ? BTW Charsadda is the home of a great poet Ghani Khan BaBa NOW use google and you will find everythin.It is also Home of another great person and that person is ME :D

Funny hindko vid, very similar to potohari.
Hindko is basically spoken in 7 districts of KPK e.g Haripur, Abbottabad,Kohat,Mansehra,Swabi,Nowshera and Peshawar. Dialects are quite different in nearly evey district. In Haripur it is spoken in almost whole of district and their dialect resemble quite a lot like punjabi as this district is located in neighbourhood of punjab as you move to northern side to Abbottabad district here hindko is spoken by 70-75 percent of district remaining district speaks potohari/Pahari so their dialect resembles like potohari. In Kohat almost 30-35 % of population speaks hindko in remaining district pashto is spoken. In Mansehra almost 40-45 percent of district speaks Hindko nearly 40% speaks pashto and in remaining district Gojri is spoken. Although kohistani and kashmiri are spoken too but these two languages are not local languages as kohistani and kashmiri speakers are inmigrants over here. Hindko in mansehra has two dialects one resembles little bit while other resembles quite a lot like Pashto. Dialect of hindko in Kohat and Mansehra is similar. In Swabi 10-15% of population speaks hindko whereas in rest district pashto is spoken. In Nowsera,Okara khattak is area where hindko is spoken. In Peshawar 15-20% of population speaks hindko which is in main city only. Neither hinkowans nor pashtun are immigrants. They all are locals in their respective diatricts and call themselves Pathan. Their is billinguality in hindko speakers of Kohat,Pehawar,Swabi and Okara khattak. Whereas in Mansehra billinguality is 90% both hindkowaans and pashtuns are billingual. Fortunately I am myself pashtun of Mansehra so I have provided you information about these two languages.

Very informative post @Ahmad Sajjad Paracha , I too have noticed that the Hindko of Haripur and Abbotabad is very similar to Punjabi and Potohari, I am not too familiar with the dialect that is spoken in Manshera that has strong similarities with Pashto, would be interested to hear that dialect.kudos

Pashtu is speaken in the Shadi Khan area.

Fascinating history of different tribes settling down in Attock.
Thanks for sharing no doubt it was very fascinating. Indus river is not a divide. In northern region of hazara pashto speakers are very densly populated(half of mansehra,kaladhaka,battgram) all of these distrists are in east of indus river and on the western side of river is swat region where again is pashto spoken. So it would be wrong to say that indus river is a divide.

Parachas are not pakhtun even if they speak pakhto but khatri/sheikh hindu convert. I don't know why no pakhtun have set you straight about it, maybe out of respect. I have noticed same thing with many hindu converts like awans (sharukh khan) and others claiming to be pathans in KPK.

Funny hindko vid, very similar to potohari.

Hindko is similar to seraiki,, potohari, pahari etc before punjabi. Basically these languages are product of Sindh sagar doab people. I'm pretty sure for average punjabi of gujrat hindko will sound just like potohari.
