Partners Selected to Develop New Terminal at Chittagong Port near Patenga

Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has selected three companies to carry out a feasibility study, which started in September 2016, for the Bay Terminal, a new facility to be constructed at the port.

The companies, including HPC Hamburg Port Consulting, a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Hamburg-based Sellhorn Engineering and KS Consultants from Dhaka, Bangladesh, have prepared a new port master plan according to which the expansion plans are set.

“The plan is to construct a port facility that focuses on containers on the Patenga coast, close to the existing port, which is located 16 kilometers inland,” HHLA said.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank and budgeted at USD 1.9 billion, the plan would enable the construction of another container terminal and a multi-purpose terminal.

“Building this terminal will significantly reduce transport costs incurred during import and export,” Mahbubul Alam, President of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), said.

Chittagong is situated in the south of Bangladesh (one of three large ports in the country), handling a large portion of the country’s seaward traffic.
