A heavily armed man is holding at least two hostages in a post office just west of Paris after but police said he was an “unbalanced” individual and not a terrorist.
Several customers managed to flee from the post office, just west of the city of Paris proper, when the gunman entered just before 1pm local time. Witnesses said that he was carrying a “weapon of war”, possibly a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Other reports have indicated the man may also have grenades.
Police said that the gunman had telephoned them from the post office. He said that he was protesting against the break-up of a relationship with a girlfriend. He was already known to police as an “unbalanced individual”.
Dario Spagnolo, who happened to be at the scene of unfolding events, wrote on Twitter: "Unfortunately, terror attack or not, no one is reassured."

The hostage situation comes as France remains on high alert following the Charlie Hebdo attacks last week. This morning a false alarm saw the entire train station of Gare de L’Est evacuated.
The incident in the Aragon post office, off avenue du Général De Gaulle in Colombes in the Hauts-de-Seine, north-west Paris, is not believed to be a terror-related incident.
