MUMBAI: Panjab University has for the first time broken into the top 400 club in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-14, well ahead of the four IITs.

Last year, only two Indian institutes made it to the top 400. Making its debut in the elite club, Panjab University joins the group of universities ranked between 226 and 250, putting it way ahead of its closest Indian rival IIT Delhi, which is in the 351-400 group. The other new entrant, besides these two, is IIT Kanpur, which falls in the 351-400 band.

The other two Indian institutes are IIT Kharagpur, which has slipped from 226-250 to the 351-400 group, and IIT Roorkee, which stays, like last year, in the 351-400 bracket.

"Though the IITs have done well in certain disciplines in other earlier rankings, neither the IITs nor the IIMs are multi-disciplinary institutes. However, that's no excuse to slip up in these rankings. IITs need to do better by focusing on aspects like research output," said MM Pallam Raju, Union minister of human resource development, commenting on the IITs faring poorly in the global rankings.

While Panjab University has not fared well on research either, it has done well in citation impact. "Panjab University receives very good scores for citation impact, which means that its academics are producing research which is widely used and valued by the academic community around the world," said Phil Baty, editor, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in a written response to ET.

According to THE World University Rankings 2013-14 data, Panjab University has scored 84.7 on citations, 29.3 on international outlook, 28.4 on industry income, 25.8 on teaching and 14.0 on research. According to Baty, Indian institutions have engaged better this year.

If that is the sole purpose of your education, no wonder your nation is in shambles.

Where is Delhi University? They have very good research facilities, and not to mention niche level of students.

My cousin just enrolled into BPharma in PU this year. Good to know its ranked up there.Good for her future. BTW she scored 96.5 in here +12 medical exams.

we will allow only pakistani girls. ;-)

Abe ane to de ise Chandigarh, ise apne aukad pata lag jayege.

This itself shows that Times ranking are useless, Where is IIT Mumbai, IIT Madras, Delhi University, Mumbai University, IIS, JNU... Can these be below Punjab University? Hilarious

Lol wtf? Is it really that good? Or the IIT professor was right, that if you pay certain amount of "participation" money, your ranking improves :cheesy:

No ranking is perfect, but Times Education are more respectable than QS ranking. Study their ranking methodology before echoing the dumb excuse given by that few lame IIT professors.
It's also worth noting that none of your ITTs made it to the top 100 in Engineering & Technology, this is consistent with Academic Ranking of World Universities.

It would be infinitely harder to get into say IIT Mumbai then to get into Punjab University. Just look at the profiles of Almuni of IIT Mumbai in Fortune 100 companies you will get an Idea.

Well done My Punjab University  :yay:
I am student of BS-SE in PUCIT Lahore. :smart: :)

It is about the Indian Punjab University, though the Pakistani and Indian Punjab Universities were same before 1947.
