Pakistan’s IT export has achieved a new milestone by crossing the mark of $1 billion for the first time ever in the history of Pakistan.

According to the data published by State Bank of Pakistan, exports of IT and IT-related services have reached to $1.067 billion in the financial year 2017-18, which was recorded $939 million in the financial year 2016-17. This shows a double-digit growth of 13%.

Overall Export rises to $3 billion
This is the second consecutive time that the IT industry has reached a record. The country also achieved the highest value of IT payment in the previous financial year 2016-17. Moreover, the IT exports are considered three times more than the data updated by the Central bank which means the overall number reached $3 billion in the current year 2017-18. The difference is due to the fact that the export revenue is highlighted in various other sectors such as financial, automobile, and health sectors.

Furthermore, as we all know Pakistan has a huge number of freelancers and the payment comes under overseas remittances, which again causes a misreporting of export numbers. Besides, there are certain local companies functioning through other countries but their products and services are delivered through Pakistan.

Factors behind the high Export rate
Export of IT and IT-enabled services increased mainly due to the increasing demand for Pakistan’s products and services in the exporting countries, which have gradually improved in recent months. Moreover, the business of large companies has improved because many foreign customers visit Pakistan because of the better security image, said Barkan Saeed Chairman Pakistan Association of Software Houses (P@SHA).

Pakistan’s exports of IT and IT-enabled services have the main market in the US (by 60 percent), followed by European countries with a 38 percent share, and then, Middle East countries.

Government’s Incentives to IT sector
The government realizes that IT plays an important role in providing a favorable environment for the growth of the IT industry through infrastructure and HR development. The government has the vision to increase the export of this sector to $5 billion per year until 2020, which is likely to be achievable as respective authorities have taken some IT sector friendly steps:

The government has approved the following incentives for the IT sector, aimed at increasing its exports

Zero income tax on IT exports until June 2025.
5% cash remuneration on IT exports, comparable with rewards for other sectors such as textiles, leather and sports.
5% turnover tax from ITeS within the federal territories.
Setting up special economic zones (SEZs) for the technical sector defined by the BOI and MoitT.
Access to commercial bank financing at preferential rates.
Moreover, a number of IT parks are being developed in the country along with the ongoing expansion of broadband services in different cities to make the ecosystem attractive and lucrative for IT companies, entrepreneurs, and start-ups.

The expansion of broadband services across the country has helped to increase IT exports in the space of freelancers, as many freelancers from Pakistan can now provide services to the international client which will ultimately boost the IT and export sector of Pakistan.

We should support every technical field which is related to exports. Pakistan is in dire need of foreign exchange in current economic crises. IT exports can be channelized and can be multiplied upto manifolds with proper attention from government policy makers.

We need to improve the banking sector so that freelancers can get their payments easily. Most banks in cities don't give accounts to poor students and they suffer because of having much greater skills.

Well most banks don't allow freelancers to open a bank account either. Government should actually try and bring PayPal to Pakistan, that will make a freelancer's life a lot easier.

PayPal comes or not is a different story but why are these bank discriminating a export potential in Pakistan. No industry is Pakistan grew as fast as it. These banks should be brought to account asap.

Another aspect that needs improvement is work ethics of Pakistani freelancers. I used to work on Upwork as a freelance programmer, and I met tens of clients who complained about their past experience with Pakistani freelancers. They had the same complain about Indians too. Most prefer Eastern Europeans over south asians for programming work.

This Pakistani mentality of Jugaar and Cho lo is what is holding us back. They should invest more in building rapport with clients and creating long term working relationships. I have been able to establish my own software house, albeit a small one for now, by just creating a list of satisfied customers who come back to me again and again. And I am not really a sole success story, I know at least two other guys who started as a freelancer but through their loyal customers have been able to set up a proper business out of it.

I don't know much about working as a freelancer bro but I knew about a banking problem from few students in my city who were facing the banking problem. They had worked for few month and were stuck with withdrawing because they had no bank accounts. The banks which were giving them connectivity were not giving them accounts and those giving them accounts were not giving them connectivity I got their problem solved through a friend but these things should be made easy.
Many students can support their education by this.

I am all for government support and incentives for increasing exports but don't agree with 0% income tax. For all the support government provides there must be some tax even if just 5% compared to 35% on other industry.

It is a good sign that your IT companies are looking beyond Pakistan for their profits. It will bring in the much needed foreign exchange. The growth will accelerate in the beginning and will aid in local development due to the indirect jobs creation that is possible in the sector.

India saw lot of low end work outsourced in the beginning of their IT journey before they started getting some serious business. We endured calls like cyber coolies, cheap code coolies from the likes of @RiazHaq. As MG aptly said "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, and then you win"

Many IT companies in India are placing bets on technologies like the AI, machine learning, data analytics and others. It is time to train the young minds in these fields to establish yourselves as IT players. Pakistan has the potential to scale up rapidly with right encouragement and support. Congrats in achieving the 1B mark.
