Pakistan’s army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, the next Field Marshal?

Please ignore the sycophants! :-)

While I admire Gen. Kyani (soldier son of a soldier), he did have some shortcomings that I'll discuss in a separate thread.

However those who are beating drums of Gen. Sharif without thorough analysis are simply idol worshipers, sorry to say.
He did have some short comings but his tenure was much more critical, just think about entire FATA and Swat under TTP when he assumed command apart from other political and military handicaps.
People want a General like John Rambo who just assumes command and starts blazing his guns. They do not think that preparing, training and capability building of the armed forces takes time. Adding the COIN capability to an entire conventional force was itself a big achievement of Kiyani.

. .
too early for all that
I recall few years back Gen Kyani uttered the claim that the TTP back was broken and what followed was dreadful.
Gen Sherif has made a similar claim re Army operation brining peace but this can turn on us by carefully planned assassinations and some large scale terrorist incidents.

e seems to be doing the right thing so far and more needs to be done regarding those terrorist outfits that have open political outlets in the society and they openly talked about extermination of minor sects in their rallies against "vulgarities of the Imran/ TuQ sit-ins".
fight is now moving to Karachi as a response to the Pak-China economic agreement. there wont be any time to celebrate and honeymoon period will be over for the 10,000 strong force dedicated to support this corridor. having the proposed 50% special forces personnel in this force shows the severity of the imminent risks, I think the mandate of that force should extend to Karachi as well. Americans should be befriended regarding this development so that they dont join the "affected parties" in the grand scheme of things that are planned for Balochistan and Karachi in the coming months.

this is where Gen saab will shine. because there is a lobby of American senators who are openly entertaining and advocating the breakup of Pakistan and General can only counter that by taking American national security chiefs and Pentagon brass into confidence and explaining them why its a bad idea and being friends will be much better for both countries.
I salute your sir,you are really the one who knows total in and out

Game in middle east is surely in 2nd last round,we are the one to be taken care before final, enemy would not,sit idle and let see his proxies destroyed never forget TTP&BLA got trained by India and Israel under nose of US and Iran in Afghanistan and Iran.

. .
I think it will be bad move if General Raheel becomes FM. He is doing the good stuff so far but it was Kayani who built the foundation for this operation in NW and General Raheel is executing that plan perfectly. Yes if govt some how uses General Raheel and Kayani' s expertise in WOT after retirement, it will be a good move.

Hi,

His short coming was his cowardice----.

Someone told Musharraf---don't promote him---he does not have a back bone---because of his background---son of an NCO. Kiyani was a gutless commander---a yes man.

Musharraf then laughed at someone sayig---" Mian sahib----aap zamindaron ki tarah sochtay hein "----.

Never ever pick a silent man for any leadership role---first you never know where they stand---second----even during serious crisis---they tend to keep quiet to let it ride---and as they have not bragged about anything----you can't hold them for not doing what they claimed to do.

Kiyani's reign was more of criminal land deals by his brothers.

.
too early to praise and promote General
his work only started
there are troubles being brewed in Karachi targeted assassinations and random killings
the conspiracies and terrorism against Pak/ China economic corridor
the TTP , BLA and sectarian issue

and operations inside Southern Punjab against madrassah organisations that are pumping our fresh recruits to behead our soldiers and civilians.

He was a pathetic general---and off course it does sound of elitism. He proved it by his actions.

@Irfan Baloch

All of Kiyani's tenure was a drama---all of Gen Shareef tenure is fighting the terrs.

People with Kiyani's personality must never be promoted beyond Colonel rank at the most Bridagier. They cannot be and must never be given the leadership positions.

Gen Shareef spoke that he is going after the Terrs---and he did---. Kiyani the silent guy---kept quiet and left the nation guessing----while his brothers were stealing real estate left and right under his name.

Zardari and Kiyani---a match made for each other.

ASIA-PACIFIC, NEWS April 25, 2015
IRIA sources confirm that different circles in Pakistan are holding in-house discussions on an idea to explore the possibility to promote Pakistan armed forces Chief of Staff General Raheel Sharif as a Field Marshal, or a five-star general.

Political sources say that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is now comfortable with General Raheel Sharif and is keen to see a “joint move” on key geo-strategic issues so as to bridge the gap between civilian and military approaches.

This has very high success chances of happening. Gen. Raheel has built a LOT of respect inside Pakistani PM's heart and in his close circles. In fact, he's the ONLY general that the PM appreciates even traveling overseas. He's successfully closed the chapter of military intervention into civilian matters even after an ex-military led support group told IK to do his election rigging and sit in / long march drama.
Plus, Gen. Raheel comes from the most decorated military family in Pakistan and for all his hard work, he will be rewarded through a promotion. This is good for Pakistan as sincere civil-military relationships were lacking for decades, resulting in numerous coupes, marshal laws, proxy wars and all. Now that its all put behind, Pakistan as a country can grow successfully on the world map.

He was a pathetic general---and off course it does sound of elitism. He proved it by his actions.

I agree with the above. Gen. Kiyani was just there because he was there....nothing more. He could've taken leadership in getting rid of terrorists inside out of Pakistan, like Gen. Raheel did. But instead he decided to live peacefully, successfully, rich-fully and with expensive cigars in his mouth with high dollars in the bank account and support to and from, your very own Mr. 10% (I thought he went up to $ 50% before he left)?.

.
Field Marshall ???? Really !!! What has he done that deserve that title ? Even Ayub Khan did not deserve that title that he awarded to himself.

.
I thought Field Marshal titles were given to generals who fought wars successfully

.
The position of FM is generally ceremonial. The 5 star position is for CDF - chief of Defence forces which is JCSC for us which is also ceremonial. complete change of the command structures would be required. Don't see it happening any time soon.

.
extend his retirement 3 year more, so that he has to promote like his mind generals(like DG ISI, DGMO) in the next in line, so that after him we should not have to face generals like Musharaf and kiyani
