27 PAK SCIENTISTS’ RESEARCH LEADS TO HIGGS BOSON DISCOVERY

image.jpg
STAFF REPORT IBD:
As many as 27 Pakistani scientists working at CERN made a visible contribution in the flawless research that has finally led to the discovery of the Higgs boson, also nicknamed the “God particle”, that travels faster than light; this experiment will help in re-enacting the first moments of the universe.

These participating scientists included Dr Hafiz Hoorani, Dr Jamila Bashir Butt, Hassan Shahzad, Taimoor Khursheed, Saleh Muhammad, Muhammad Ahmad, Wajid Ali Khan, Adilur Rehman Zafar, Ishtiaq Hussain, Waqar Ahmad, Shamoona Fawad Qazi, Imran Malik, Zia Aftab and Muhammad Shariq Khan.

According to the working mechanism, these scientists had worked at the main laboratory in CERN, developed in the northwest suburbs of Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border in 1954, carrying out research work simultaneously in line with the directives given by a team of senior CERN scientists using 8 MV Pelletron Tandem accelerator facility based on sophisticated technology at the NCP.

“This opportunity provided an immense learning opportunity which would help these scientists further groom with an enabling environment towards the future endeavours of science,” NCP’s Director General, Hamid Saleem, told this scribe while giving details of this development.

The Higgs boson is a subatomic particle whose existence was confirmed by the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The discovery of the particle provides the last remaining bit of empirical evidence necessary for the Standard Model of physics, which seeks to explain the existence of all forces in the universe except gravity.

Hamid explained that a grid having 500 computers was set up in NCP and the Pakistani scientists have so far contributed in numerous ways including detector construction, simulation, physics analysis, grid computing, computational software development and manufacturing of mechanical equipment.

Pakistan had also made a material contribution to the tune of 10 million dollars. These Pakistani scientists were also among those proud fellows who were wildly applauding the most ambitious experiment held at CERN with protons being fired in 27-km tunnel in an attempt to unlock the secrets of the universe.

The NCP DG said that they prepared CMS detector consisting of assembling and testing of 288 Resistive Plate Chambers, helped in fabrication of mechanical pieces at the cost much less than the European cost and designed tracker alignment and other opto-electronic related work.

It is also pertinent to mention here that CERN has given best supplier award to Heavy Mechanical Complex in recognition of its services in providing necessary equipment in the preparatory phases of the experiment.

“NCP is offering basic facilities to conduct research in various fields including centrifuge, accelerator, fission and fusion, coating and metallization, medical and pharmaceutical, semi-conductor, solar, live stock, plasma sterilization, food processing and packaging,” he said.

Today, CERN, one of the outstanding high energy physics laboratories in the world, has not only more than fulfilled the goals of its founder, but is home of thousands of physicists and engineers from all over the world.

In the 1950s, physicists were aware of four different types of forces in the universe: gravity, electromagnetic force, the force that attracts an electron towards the nucleus of an atom, and the force that keeps the nucleus of the atom together.

It is to be mentioned here that in one aspect CERN has a very special relationship with Pakistan in that it provided the first and crucial evidence of unification through experiments done at CERN. In 1973, one of the predictions of electro-weak unification theory proposed by Prof. Abdul Salam, the only Pakistani Nobel Laureate, Weinberg and Glashow resulted in Nobel Prize in physics in 1979 to these physicists.

*Dr Tiziano says Pakistani scientists playing leading role in nuclear research at CERN

Pakistani engineers, physicists, software engineers and technicians have been major contributors to construction of the CMS and they have substantially worked to build, test, install and commission the project, said CERN Compact Muon Slenoid (CMS) Spokesman Dr Tiziano while giving a presentation during a six-member delegation meeting of CMS, CERN with Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and senior PU faculty members at the Committee Room of VC’s office on Wednesday.

The CMS delegation consisted of Andrzej Charkiewicz, Dr Frank Hartmann, Dr Duccio Abbaneo, Dr Paraskevas Spicas, Suhail Ahmed Janjua, Dr Badar Suleman and PU Registrar Prof Dr Amin Ather, Prof Dr Khawaja Harris Rasheed, Dr Shoukat Ali and others were also present on the occasion.

Dr Tizano said that Pakistani scientists had developed detector control system and testing of data quality and monitoring is responsibility of the Pakistani team. He said that Pakistani team also built front-end electronics for the CMS RE4 project and playing leading role in installing and commissioning the RP4 project. He said that his organisation’s future goal was to investigate into dark matter, the true nature of galaxies. He said that the CERN was a global laboratory and an organisation to provide tools to academicians to do research on physics and to explore nature.

On this occasion, PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran gave a briefing on the Punjab University and detailed its research activities.

While HIGGS boson discovery of God particle received Nobel prize in Physics 2013

The PAEC played a leading role in establishing ties with CERN and took responsibility of constructing 8 out of 10 Magnet Supports for CMS detector.

Magnet Supports are installed at CERN today with the label 'Made in Pakistan'

One of the early signals indicating the presence of the Higgs Boson came from RPCs made in Pakistan. In September 2012, CERN management, in a complimentary letter to Chairman PAEC, recognized the services of Pakistan and presented a CMS cooperation shield.

The existence of Higgs Boson was verified during LHC experiments at CERN in 2012.
Pakistan can proudly claim that in these experiments, not only during the initial period of infrastructure erection but also during experimental phase, Pakistani scientists and engineers significantly contributed in this international venture.

Good to hear Pak scientists at the forefront of cutting edge technology.

It's heartening to know that some of the best brains in the world are from South Asia!

And by the way, around 200 of the 2,000 scientists doing the experiment are from India! For CERN, Indian companies Crompton Greaves and Kirloskar Systems have manufactured and supplied components including magnets for construction of the 27 km circular accelerator under Geneva. The linear collider project has four Indian institutions involved in both theory and technology contributions, with theory contribution coming in from Aligarh Muslim University, IISC Bangalore, and technology contributions from IUAC, New Delhi, TIFR, Mumbai, Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata.

One of the main components of the CERN hardware is the mind boggling 8,000 tonne magnet, heavier than the Eiffel tower that was made with Indian contributions.

Not to forget the millions of electronic chips made in Chandigarh and of course the Indian made hydraulic stands that support the tunnel, which is like the biggest fridge in the world!
