Islam is general quite liberal the only real difference is the dress code and activities around liberalism around relations/marriage
Islam in books is one thing and the real society in indigenous areas of Pakistan are a different thing. Islam doesn't really shape 100% aspects of lives of people at least in my area Gujranwala. When I was growing up in 80s we didn't really discuss islam much beyond halal/haram food, doing undershave, purity bath rituals , offering prayers and fasts, that is all the Islam people used to have. The current craze of religiosity is pretty new and mostly restricted to intellectual classes. One thing I have noticed is that younger generations are less abusive and dirty minded than previous generations in our area, they are also definitely more religious than earlier generations.
Growing up I never saw any concept of "liberal equality" practiced around me at all, so I don't believe that an average pakistani is "liberal" champion of human rights and equality, these are pretty foreign concepts at least in my area in pakistan.
