Pakistani dies after immolation to protest police bribery

KARACHI, Pakistan — Pakistani officials say a rickshaw driver who set himself on fire to protest police demands for bribes, has died of severe burns in Karachi.

Mohammad Khalid died on Monday morning, two days after setting himself on fire.

Khalid’s self-immolation — according to a letter featured on Pakistan’s Geo Television station — was an act of protest against police demands for bribes. Khalid reportedly refused to pay a bribe to an officer who then fined Khalid a ticket amounting to a quarter of his daily earnings.

Amir Ahmed Shaikh, the police chief in Karachi, said an investigation is underway.

Following the incident, Shaikh ordered the police not to impose heavy fines on rickshaw drivers for traffic violations in the city.

A rickshaw is a motorized three-wheeled vehicle usually carrying one passenger.

THIS is stupid! Rickshaw drivers are the worst drivers on the streets...They will turn suddenly (without care in the world) forcing the car behind to put the breaks quickly!

What should have been done was fire the police who was asking for bribery and send a msg that would the case for ANY bribery hungry bastard!

But if he had done that, would the police officer be fired?

Pak police / general population take bribes it's a national sport. To clean up you would have to fire the whole police force.

Yes, it is not the most ideal system but still much better than rest of the Muslim world especially the GCC and middle-east. After watching the Khashoggi's episode, I really that Pakistan is much better place to live despite economic situation.

As long as he could evidence the officer asked for a bribe and he had commited no crime, yeah. It's nayaPakistan, the social media is driving all sorts of crazy stuff to happen right now.

1. Bodycams for police and dash cam for police vehicles.
2. All fines to be paid at a station or digitally/no cash in police hands.
3. Have "mystery shoppers" who are paid to approach police/drive around hoping to get stopped by police. They secretly record goings on, anyone caught doing wrong, should be fired without pension. You'll see the fear strike the police.

I heard a story in local radio last week. A Pakistani man from Jehlum recently returned to the UK and was telling of his story with the police. Now the story teller has some sway in politics there, his friends kid was in a fight with another kid, his friend asked him to go to the station and lean on the police, or at least ensure his kid was given an even hand, because in Pakistan, as you know anyone who has a contact anywhere, tries to use it to lean on the police. This guy went there and the police officers who were familiar with him, sent him away. They told him they respect him but the law has to take it's course "we don't know who's watching anymore".

Well these all peoples belongs to pakistan. No one is from India. We own had makeup our society: if any one claim for bribe its not new thing afterall. Public would enjoying the fruits with daily cultivation, because

1- In gen public a mindset is very active that government job is only for double your assets with complete authority.

2- No suitable environment to regulate a law comply with UK by have a underdevelop country.

Your ideas aren't bad but easier said then done.

They prob just about get uniform let alone body cam.

Not feasible for time being in a country like Pakistan with mentality people have there.

At least for a long time. To implement in Pakistan is a whole nother kettle of fish. I been and dealt with these people, feel like shooting em dead, they're a waste of oxygen.

over-reaction it is. in last days we have seen people burn their motorcycle and rikshaws because Traffic wardens give them a ticket. matlb 50000 ka rikshaw jala dena hy par 500 ka fine ni dena .. jahalat.
